This wonderful 'off the beaten track' boat adventure is organized by Gersan & Ily (the on-site team up at Pura Vida Ecolodge) & can be arranged on most days with at least 24-48 hours advance. The tour starts with hot coffee and a quick walk around the 'finca' down at the village of Coronado where Gerzan & Iliana live. There is then a short walk to the boat (a traditional Tico ‘botecito’, essential

ly a small boat with BOTH motor and oars). The trip is limited to a maximum of 4-6 people & includes drinks, fresh tropical fruit and a great ‘tico’ picnic lunch. The exact departure/return times of the adventure depend largely on tide times, but typically leave first thing after breakfast, returning between 4-6 hours later. You’ll get to see a ‘real and rugged’ side of Costa Rica, leaving the dusty village of Coronado behind while you venture through the mangroves to an impressive opening in the Rio Terraba (River Terraba). There are options to fish or simply admire the impressive landscapes, nature and surroundings. The real reward is after the boat journey, as you will arrive at a secret beach (Playa Garza named after the thousands of birds that nest in the area) where you will most likely have kilometre after kilometre of volcanic sand and coconut palms all to yourself. The tour was initially designed and thought up by Gersan himself, believing it is a real opportunity for him and his wife Iliana to offer guests from Pura Vida Ecolodge (www.puravidaecolodge.com) this secret and untouched slice of Costa Rica at a very affordable price. Kika & I have helped them put together a brochure and taken a few photos and written the descriptions etc but ALL money goes directly to Gerzan & Ily in an attempt to give something back to the local community. After all, from start to finish, one of the main philosophies of Pura Vida Ecolodge has been to develop a sustainable project that works together with nature and the local community to provide something really quite unique and special. Iliana, his wife, is an OUTSTANDING cook and prepared a delicious birthday meal during our stay. They have a daughter and seeing the three kids playing together on the beach was a sweet moment..." A few lovely shots by Ellen & Brian of their day out with Gersan on his Pura Vida Boat Adventure to Playa Garza

This particular tour is for the guests who are after something a little different to the ‘more commercial’ tours in the area. This is your chance to see and discover a real side of Costa Rica and its hidden gem, the ‘Zona Sur’. As the trip generally leaves first thing in the morning, the surrounding rain forest is coming to life as the sun rises, with a good variety of wildlife on offer. Gersan & Ily (your local hosts) will bring some fishing lines where you can try your luck to catch ‘parga’ in the labyrinth of mangroves or indeed in the main river, or if you prefer, just sit back and admire the spectacular scenery, surroundings, nature and sea breeze. The real reward is after the adventure of navigating the mangroves and crossing the river, when you will arrive at the secret Playa Garca, named after the thousands of birds that visit the countless kilometres of dark volcanic sand every day. After leaving the boat at the pier, there is a short walk through coconut and pineapple plantations to the deserted beach… Here you can swim, sunbathe or drink coconut after coconut. There is also a ‘palapa’ offering shade if the sun is too strong.
