Green iguanas (scientific name: Iguana iguana) can be found in all sizes, weights and colors in Geckoes garden. The juveniles exhibit the typical, bright green color, while the adults have a much more ferocious and terrifying appearance.
Green iguanas are considered an endangered species, so we are very pleased to be able to provide a safe environment where they can thrive, at Geckoes Lodge. (Just make sure not to leave your car door open, as the young iguanas rather like a well sheltered spot 😁)

In a jungle garden, it's easy to lose track of what you've planted - new additions get all overgrown, accidentally weeded or eaten by grasshoppers. So it makes for a surprise every time you see what comes into bloom. Today we discovered this beautiful, new addition: the gorgeous yellow Heliconia lingulata.

This little guy has been around for some time, first with his/her mom, and now on its own. After 2 terrible downpours in 1 day, it held on valiantly to its favorite tree. We seriously had to suppress the urge to grab a towel and rub it dry.

Tip for a day excursion: visit Puerto Limón, an hour's drive from Geckoes Lodge. Off the beaten path, this port city has some beautiful, hidden corners and is well worth a visit, if only to soak up the couleur locale.

Beach hopping is not to be taken lightly on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. If you want to do it properly, you'll need at least a week. Mum and baby José at Geckoes Lodge

We have a first! November 9 2022, 8.20am: a baby sloth is born at Geckoes Lodge. High up in a tree, it happened in the blink of an eye. No more than minutes later, mum is happily eating, one arm holding on to the branch, one leg holding on to the baby, who is surprisingly fast and acrobatic for a newborn. We named the little one José, after our gardener who discovered them. No pictures or videos of the birth, as José was too impressed to think of filming this intimate moment :-) But we can gladly share some images of their first minutes together. (We were obviously too thrilled for a steady hand, so sorry for the wobbly filming.)
