Amongst other things, we are growing cacao at Joya de Damas! We hope our efforts will bring us together as a community, provide work for our neighbors, and produce earnings that can support and enrich our tour. Here is a video of our most recent activity this week. Please enjoy our chocolate journey with us, and we are open to ideas and tips!

Today is the first day we have been able to share our hidden waterfall cave, "La Catarata Escondida." This access was wiped out by the rains last year, but now it's strong and ready to withstand the elements. From the perspective of the cave's natural swimming area, you can appreciate the beautiful switchbacks and arcing trees. I'm so proud of the hard work on this trail system being completed!

This is not only true but adorable!!!

Hola amigos! It's been a while since I have been very active on the Joya de Damas IG or page , but today, everything is changing around here.

I have finally made a permanent move to Costa Rica, and we have been working hard to rebuild our trail system to be safer and long-lasting. The trail project started in October. The rainy season gave us a run for our money, but we worked patiently and with respect for nature and we are close!

I went on an epic hike today ( 1 hour each way ) with my hard-working Father and Son team. Alberto ( father), who is our trail blazer, owns the property above Joya de Damas, and he took me to see the waterfalls there. Leiner ( son ), who you can also follow at , ensured we had a safe and fun adventure.

I came out of the experience feeling re-invigorated and more excited than ever before to create adventure tours and bring people to see the magic of Joya de Damas and her sister properties.

I want to kick off this holiday season with a series of instagram stories documenting our adventure today. Stay tuned for daily updates and experience this tour with me one story at a time. When the entire story has "aired," I will release it as a reel here on IG and our page.

I can't wait to share this adventure with you!

Enjoy our trail network which is over 10 kilometers in total thanks to the work of and crew. We currently have trails to 6 natural swimming areas and waterfalls and 3 stand alone waterfalls.  We have more paths in the works and 21 more hidden places that will be accessible as we continue to develop our trail system.

Chrysothemis friedrichsthaliana: Family Gesneriaceae is an herb that is known to be used by the Chocó Indians for diarrhea and snake bite. The Chocó are natives of Panama and Colombia but not Costa Rica. This hairy-leaved herbaceous plant ranges from Nicaragua to Ecuador.  It blooms May to January and can be found in moist to wet forests, partly shaded roadsides, oil palm plantations and weedy sites. This picture was taken on the trail near one of our waterfalls - La Catarata de la Caverna.

It is truly amazing the abundance of medicinal plants that grow in the jungle. A pretty flower like this Chrysothemis may be hiding medical secrets. About 7,000 medical compounds prescribed by western doctors are derived from plants and nearly all of them are found in tropical rainforests. Tropical moist forests cover only 6% of the planet but they are in danger. If you have a pulse, this is not news to you! But, there is hope, of course! The more tropical rainforest that is purchased with the sole intent of protecting it and not touching it, the better chance the world has of preserving these ecosystems and all their bounty.

Essentially, invest in yourself and the planet by having a good time exploring national parks and undeveloped places like our waterfall trails at .

As you make your way to the eco park, you will drive along Red Vial Cantonal 100. To the left, as seen in this photograph, Rio San Antonio appears, giving you the first glimpse of the pure mountain waters that make up the perimeter of Joya de Damas.

The rivers of San Antonio de Damas all have unique names. Río San Antonio follows the road and eventually goes it’s own way. The Río Zoncho flanks Joya on her western border and Río Damas forms her eastern perimeter.

These rivers trickel off towards the ocean but where do they begin? Joya de Damas is nestled among the lowland tropical forests of Costa Rica’s pacific coast. The rivers flow down from the Tilaran and Talamanca Mountain Ranges.

We planted 400 cacao trees last year with the help of some amazing volunteers like and ! It takes 3-5 years for a cacao tree to produce pods that can be made into chocolate. Our trees are about 9 months old now and we are enjoying learning about cacao production as we go. I can't wait to learn more from experts like

Phytolacca rivinoides: Family Phytolaccacae is a large sprawling herb that blooms and fruits all year. Found in Moist to wet forests, second growth, open habitats and roadsides. This herbaceous plant - meaning a plant with predominantly non-woody stems- was spotted on the road leading to our property. Of the 5 species of Phytolacca, Rivinoides is the most common.
