Cool facts about Crocodile and the Caiman.

Can you notice the differences?

The spectacled caiman (Caiman crocodilus) looks like a smaller version of the American crocodile with a rounder snout. It is typically found in freshwater canals and lakes and usually grows up to 5 feet in length.

American Crocodiles are significantly larger in size as compared to Spectacled Caimans. They can grow up to 6 meters (20 feet) and weigh over 900 kilos (2000 lbs), while Spectacled Caimans can only grow up to 2.5 meters (8 feet) and weigh around 60 kilos (130 lbs).

The American Crocodile belongs to the Crocodilydae family, while the Spectacled Caiman is from the Alligatoridae family and is more closely related to the American Alligator.

True crocodiles have longer, narrower snouts, while Spectacled Caimans and American Alligators have wider, shorter ones. Alligators' wider snouts are for crushing hard prey, while crocodile snouts are more versatile.

Bird of the week: The beautiful Scarlet Macaw.

Fun facts about this fantastic bird 🔻

➖ With extremely powerful beaks, the Scarlet macaw can easily crush nuts and seeds to eat. It also uses its beak as a climbing aid and to crunch on branches to keep busy.

➖ Scarlet macaws are one of the most intelligent bird species. When in captivity, they can mimic words and sounds and learn tricks.

➖ Scarlet macaws are also able to distinguish colors and shapes. Some of these birds can even perform simple math problems with the right trainer.

➖ Scarlet macaws are said to have the intelligence of a 4-8-year-old child with the emotional intelligence of a 2-year-old. This means they can be demanding, cranky, and even temper tantrums if not given proper attention.

Bird of the week!

Another rare bird in our country!

It is the first report for the Pacific of Costa Rica. After some rumors in 2017, in 2022, it was reported in Tortuguero.

Last week .birder David Mora Vargas one of our top guides, managed to find this species while leading a tour with some of our clients.

Lesser Black-backed Gull (Larus fuscus)

Slender, long-winged gull, slightly smaller than Herring Gull. Adults show dark gray back and yellow legs; in winter note fairly heavy streaking on head and neck. Takes four or five years to reach adult plumage; immatures can be difficult to distinguish from other gulls, especially Herring.

On first- or second-year birds, look for contrastingly whitish head with dark smudge around the eye, long wings, dark bill, whitish rump and tail base, and evenly dark wings in flight.

Can be found around any body of water but prefers beaches and flats. Often with flocks of other large gulls. Common in Eurasia, wintering to Africa and Southeast Asia.

Population in North America has increased dramatically in the last couple of decades; now regular (even fairly common!) on the Atlantic coast, rarer inland and farther west. (Ebird)

Bird of the week!

- Jabiru (Jabiru mycteria)

The Jabiru is a large stork species found in the Americas, from Mexico to Argentina, except west of the Andes. Although it occasionally wanders into the United States, it is most common in the Pantanal region of Brazil and the Eastern Chaco region of Paraguay. The Jabiru is the only member of its genus and derives its name from the Tupi–Guaraní language, meaning "swollen neck."

Unfortunately, the Jabiru's habitat is threatened by humans engaging in various economic activities, leading to the destruction of mangroves, swamps, and trees where the birds nest, such as the ceibo and Gallinazo trees. This habitat destruction poses a significant threat to the species and underscores the need for conservation efforts to protect the Jabiru and its habitat.

Bird of the week. 😎

The beautiful Collared Forest Falcon (Micrastur semitorquatus)

A large and lanky bird commonly heard in tropical forests, but rarely seen. It hunts from the canopy to the forest floor, usually calling from high up in trees. Notable features are its long yellow legs, long rounded tail with narrow white bars, and adults with white underparts and dark 'sideburns'.

Adults are usually white below, with dark ‘sideburns,’ but can be buffy below and very rarely are black overall. Immatures have variable dark barring below.

Mangroves are trees with shrubby appearance that grow along the shores in tropical and subtropical regions.

Unlike most plants, they can thrive in brackish water. Their unique roots, which resemble stilts, are anchored in sediment while extending above the water's surface.

Mangrove ecosystems offer a wide range of environmental and economic benefits.

Nature Group Costa Rica is currently working on a project to restore the Mangrove forest at our property by the river.

Bird of the week.👇

Distribution in Costa Rica.

This species is commonly found in the shallows and slopes of the Caribbean and South Pacific. However, it is rare in the drier shallows to the west of Upala.

It can be found as far north as the Carara National Park and, on rare occasions, the Barranca River.

It has been observed that it can also reach the Pacific slope by passing through the Guanacaste Mountain Range volcanoes. Locally, it can be found up to 1,200 meters high.

It is an exceptionally vocal raptor; when it is annoyed, it gives a short nasal call like a laugh, and it also gives a guac guac or haw haw.

The "guaco" song is a long, rhythmic series of hollow notes, sounding like a child's cry.

It often begins with a bubbly laugh, and then the bird initiates a series of guas that gradually increase in volume and frequency until they finally become gua-co phrases; the entire sequence lasts a minute or more; sometimes two individuals make a duet, often heard at sunset."
