Today, Costa Rica celebrates the National Day of Persons with Disabilities, a date established by Law No. 8671 in 2009, in honor of the passage of Law 7600 on May 29, 1996. This law, known as the Equal Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities Act, marked a milestone in the fight for inclusion and equity in our country.

🔹 Why is this date important?

It is a reminder that inclusion is not only a right, but a collective responsibility. Although we have made progress in eliminating physical and social barriers, much remains to be done to guarantee the full and effective participation of all persons with disabilities in all aspects of national life.

Hoy, Costa Rica celebra el Día Nacional de la Persona con Discapacidad, una fecha establecida por la Ley N° 8671 en 2009, en honor a la aprobación de la Ley 7600 el 29 de mayo de 1996. Esta ley, conocida como la Ley de Igualdad de Oportunidades para las Personas con Discapacidad, marcó un hito en la lucha por la inclusión y la equidad en nuestro país .

🔹 ¿Por qué es importante esta fecha?

Es un recordatorio de que la inclusión no es solo un derecho, sino una responsabilidad colectiva. Aunque hemos avanzado en la eliminación de barreras físicas y sociales, aún queda mucho por hacer para garantizar una participación plena y efectiva de todas las personas con discapacidad en todos los aspectos de la vida nacional.

The ocelot, a medium-sized nocturnal cat, is one of the best-kept secrets of Santa Rosa National Park in Guanacaste. Its spotted coat and silent gait make it an effective hunter in the tropical dry forest.

Santa Rosa, in addition to being a historic site, preserves one of the few mature dry forests in Mesoamerica. It is home to coyotes, deer, monkeys, and, with a little luck, wild cats. Although it is rare to see an ocelot, camera traps have captured its constant presence. Preserving these habitats is key to keeping these secretive guardians in the wild.

El ocelote, un felino nocturno de tamaño mediano, es uno de los secretos mejor guardados del Parque Nacional Santa Rosa en Guanacaste. Su pelaje moteado y su andar silencioso lo convierten en un cazador eficaz en el bosque tropical seco.

Santa Rosa, además de ser un sitio histórico, preserva uno de los pocos bosques secos maduros de Mesoamérica. Es el hogar de coyotes, venados, monos y, con un poco de suerte, gatos monteses. Aunque es raro ver un ocelote, las cámaras trampa han capturado su presencia constante. Preservar estos hábitats es clave para mantener a estos sigilosos guardianes en libertad.

The boa constrictor, one of the largest snakes in Costa Rica, lives in places like the La Selva Biological Station in Sarapiquí. Although it commands respect due to its size, it is not venomous and hunts by constriction, controlling rodent and bird populations.

La Selva is a key site for scientific research and educational tourism, with infrastructure that allows for exploring the forest without disturbing its balance. Seeing a boa constrictor in its natural environment is a unique opportunity to demystify these reptiles and understand their ecological value. Furthermore, the Sarapiquí forest is teeming with life: birds, frogs, monkeys, and butterflies accompany the tour.

La boa constrictor, una de las serpientes más grandes de Costa Rica, habita en lugares como la Estación Biológica La Selva en Sarapiquí. Aunque impone respeto por su tamaño, no es venenosa y caza por constricción, controlando poblaciones de roedores y aves.

La Selva es un sitio clave para la investigación científica y el turismo educativo, con infraestructura que permite explorar el bosque sin alterar su equilibrio. Ver una boa en su ambiente natural es una oportunidad única para desmitificar a estos reptiles y comprender su valor ecológico. Además, el bosque de Sarapiquí está lleno de vida: aves, ranas, monos y mariposas acompañan el recorrido.

Small, bright, and extremely striking: this is the blue poison dart frog (Dendrobates auratus), one of the jewels of the Costa Rican Caribbean. This amphibian lives in the humid forests of Cahuita National Park and its surrounding areas, where its metallic blue color warns predators of its toxicity.

Despite its size, it plays an important role in the ecosystem, helping to control insect populations and being an indicator of good environmental health. The Southern Caribbean, with its black sand beaches, coral reefs, and Afro-Caribbean culture, is a destination that combines nature, culture, and conservation. The frogs can be observed during guided walks, especially on rainy days or at dusk.

Pequeña, brillante y extremadamente llamativa: así es la rana flecha azul (Dendrobates auratus), una de las joyas del Caribe costarricense. Este anfibio vive en los húmedos bosques del Parque Nacional Cahuita y sus alrededores, donde su color azul metálico advierte a los depredadores de su toxicidad.

A pesar de su tamaño, juega un rol importante en el ecosistema, ayudando a controlar poblaciones de insectos y siendo indicador de buena salud ambiental. El Caribe Sur, con sus playas de arena negra, arrecifes de coral y cultura afrocaribeña, es un destino que combina naturaleza, cultura y conservación. Las ranas pueden observarse durante caminatas guiadas, especialmente en días lluviosos o al atardecer.

El mono aullador, conocido por su poderoso rugido que se escucha a kilómetros, es uno de los habitantes más comunes de los bosques secos del norte de Costa Rica, especialmente en Guanacaste y la Península de Nicoya. Estos primates viven en grupos familiares y se desplazan entre los árboles con agilidad. Sus llamadas sirven para marcar territorio y comunicarse con otras tropas. In various locations, long, bag-shaped nests hang from the tree canopy: they are the homes of the Montezuma oriole. This black bird with a yellow beak and robotic call is one of the most striking birds in the tropics.

They build communal nests, hanging several in the same tree to protect themselves from predators. Their song, which sounds like a digital or video game sound, draws the attention of any visitor. Seeing an oriole colony is like entering a natural, organized, and vibrant aerial city.

En distintos lugares , cuelgan del dosel de los arboles, unos nidos largos en forma de bolsa: son los hogares de la oropéndola de Montezuma. Esta ave negra con pico amarillo y cantos robóticos es una de las más llamativas del trópico.

Construyen nidos en comunidad, colgando varios en el mismo árbol para protegerse de depredadores. Su canto, que parece un sonido digital o de videojuego, llama la atención de cualquier visitante. Ver una colonia de oropéndolas es como entrar a una ciudad aérea natural, organizada y vibrante.
