🦋 Did you know?

In Costa Rica, the stunning Blue Morpho butterfly isn't actually blue!

Its wings reflect light in a way that makes them appear blue to our eyes, but they're actually brown. This optical illusion, known as structural coloration, helps them evade predators.

Howler monkeys are considered one of the loudest land animals on Earth. Their calls can reach up to 140 decibels and can be heard up to 3 miles away through dense rainforest. This impressive vocal ability is due to their enlarged hyoid bone, which acts as a resonating chamber to amplify their calls.

Costa Rica is home to two species of howler monkeys - the mantled howler (Alouatta palliata) and the Guatemalan black howler (Alouatta pigra).

🇨🇷 Costa Rica's red-eyed tree frog has an incredible trick up its sleeve! When threatened, it opens its bright red eyes to startle predators, giving it a chance to hop away to safety. By day, its vibrant green body blends seamlessly with the lush rainforest leaves. Nature’s camouflage at its finest!

Collared Aracaris are said to have a sinister appearance but they are far from evil! These birds are sweet and friendly; although they sometimes eat fledging birds, insects, and small reptiles, their diet consists mostly of fruits. Aracaris are social and they are found in small flocks.

They live in humid rainforests and woody lowland forests from sea level to 1,500 meters in elevation, from southern Mexico to Colombia and parts of Venezuela. They travel through Central America yearly.

Their tails are pointier than toucans, which is why they are considered toucanets.

Costa Rica welcomes not one but two migrations of humpback whales annually. One migration originates from the Arctic, arriving in late January, and the second from Antarctica, arriving in late July.

The whales come to the country's Pacific Coast to breed and give birth.🇨🇷

The Coati, also known as Coatimundi or the local term, Pizote, is very well-known in Costa Rica. Coatis are exotic animals that inhabit forested areas in Central America. They are found through most of Costa Rica, especially near the coast. 🇨🇷

Coatis are considered very good tree climbers and swimmers even though they spend a lot of time on the ground. Their long tail help them keep their balance.

Dear Community!
🎥 Join us this Saturday for a fun and interactive livestream about our upcoming retreat, The Essence of Bodysurfing: Costa Rica.

Tara and Adrianne will be joined by our bodysurf instructors Spencer Dunlap and Hannah Walsh to talk about their love of bodysurfing and how they both got into it, how this retreat came to be, and what to expect from it.

✅ Hannah Walsh ()
Hannah Walsh began bodysurfing as a kid growing up on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. She was a competitive swimmer as well as an Ocean Lifeguard, and would spend her free time wave sliding. She began teaching bodysurfing while working at a surf camp in Costa Rica, co-designing a teaching curriculum.

She began in-water photography and videography while she lived in Costa Rica, going on to study documentary filming in Canada. Her filmmaking is grounded in stories about water, often featuring swimming, surfing, or bodysurfing. She aims to utilize her voice to make action sports more inclusive, and to bring awareness to the natural world and compel people to take care of it.

✅ Spencer Dunlap ()
Spencer has been bodysurfing for fun since he was young, loving the connection he felt with the ocean and the exhilaration of catching waves with his body alone. He started coaching bodysurfing and surfing formally after moving to Costa Rica, co-designing a teaching curriculum. He was also an Ocean Lifeguard in San Diego, California.

As he got more into the sport, Spencer would always try to seek information about bodysurfing online, but learned it was not easy to find. After years of researching and collecting any information he could find about bodysurfing, he began Bodysurf Collective and now shares helpful resources about the relatively unknown world of bodysurfing for the world to see.

📆 This Saturday, May 4th!
🕗 9:30am (PST) // 10:30am (Costa Rica)
📍: Here! Instagram Live

🎁 We will share a resource about some of our favorite bodysurf equipment with all the attendants!

Make sure to set a reminder and spread the word!
See you there!

☝🏽 Facts about Costa Rica's Blue Zone - Nicoya Península

Nicoyans regularly take in the sunshine, which helps their bodies produce vitamin D for strong bones and healthy body function. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with osteoporosis and heart disease, but regular, “smart” sun exposure (about 15 minutes on the legs and arms) can help supplement your diet and make sure you’re getting enough of this vital nutrient.

Visit the Nicoya Península to learn and adopt the surprisingly simple lifestyle habits that could increase longevity.

The term ‘Blue Zone’ was first coined by the author, Dan Buettner, in his book, “The Blue Zone.”

Through a variety of studies, he discovered certain places on Earth where there are more centenarians than other areas of the world. He discovered certain things they have in common, which he calls the “Power 9”.

1. Move Naturally
2. Life Purpose
3. Down Shift
4. 80% Rule – Eat until you are 80% full
5. Mostly Plant Based Diet
6. Wine at 5
7. Sense of Belonging
8. Loved Ones First
9. Find Your Tribe

We can custom create a Blue Zone trip for you where you’ll be traveling and experiencing life in the Blue Zone of Costa Rica. Meet the locals, eat the fresh and healthy cuisine, and get in a large dose of fun daily activity!

Taste of Oaxaca Retreat
Oaxaca, Mexico 🇲🇽
November 16 - 23, 2024

Join Tara & Adrianne for an adventure to delight all of the senses in one of their favorite countries in the world — Mexico! This trip takes place in Oaxaca, a state so diverse and unique that it provides ample opportunities for feasting (your eyes, palette, and heart), and self-discovery alike.

The trip begins in colonial Oaxaca City, one of Mexico’s culinary, artistic, and cultural epicenters. There, we will participate in a number of cultural activities, such as walking through ancient Zapotec ruins, perusing local artisan markets, participating in our own artisan workshop, learning to cook delicious local fare, and sipping Oaxaca’s famous drink, Mezcal. Oh - and eating delicious food every step of the way.

Next, we will head into the Sierra Sur mountain range to San Jose del Pacifico, which sits at 8,000 feet above sea level — higher than the clouds themselves! There, we will spend a night and do some ecotourism and cultural activities such as zip-lining, hanging bridges, and a “temazcal” ceremony (a typical sweat lodge of the region). And, of course, amazing fare.

Finally, we will head down to the fabled and beautiful Oaxacan coast, to the “Pueblo Mágico” of Mazunte, where we will spend our time hiking, watching the sunsets from the beach, snorkeling, and witnessing the prolific sea life of the area. The trip will end with some free time to explore however your little heart would enjoy. Don’t forget the mouth-watering coastal cuisine!

This trip is about the best things in life, in a region of Mexico known for arts & culture, kindness and hospitality, and FOOD. It’s about slowing down, taking it easy, and enjoying life.

Save your spot with a $500 deposit.
