The Shortcut:
It’s nothing groundbreaking, and that third act is dragged out, but Year 10 provides a lot of thrills and violence for the hour and 36 minute runtime. Plus, it’s great to see a post-apocalypse tale that doesn’t bother with moral black-and-white, staying strictly in the gray.

The Long Route:
Post-apocalypse horror is usually my least favorite genre, but Year 10 had some welcome surprises, even if it needed some more finetuning.
The story is straightforward, with only a bit of text at the beginning serving as backstory. It’s a tale of people killing people and sometimes helping others. Make no mistake, there aren’t any good people here, just people trying to survive, and that’s exactly what is shown. I wish there was more to the characters, but it still takes its darkness and runs with it. It
The visuals play very, very safe. Again, nothing you wouldn’t expect from a post-apocalypse. There is some skill and polish to the cinematography, with some of the more raw moments coming across cleanly, and every tense scene filled with suspense. That said, it’s still quite formulaic, and never adds anything new, even if it’s impressive for a low budget.
Acting was also quite grounded. Everyone shows real fear, anger, and desperation, and all without a single word. Despite it being a violent post-apocalyptic scenario, there are never any overreactions.
The soundtrack feels a bit too samey throughout, but it does have a nice, almost tribal touch that works well. Sound effects are crisp and loud, so the violence always has that necessary impact.
If you’re looking for a good post-apocalyptic film and have the patience to wait out the third act, Year 10 is worth checking out.
