🔎 The Western City Gate of Belgrade, rising high above the highway, was built in 1971-79 at the centre of the modernist New Belgrade neighborhood.
It would become the ultimate icon of Yugoslav economic progress.
it is a massive portal that has been created by a couple of linked towers, capped with a restaurant as a crown.
With its' overall height of 140 metres it immediately became one of Belgrade's most memorable landmarks.

The "Genex tower" consists of two towers of unequal height: the lower was used by the state-owned Genex company and the higher (26 floors) was a residential block with eight units per floor. The towers are joined at the top by a two-storey bridge.

🛸 On top of the towers stands round, flying-saucer looking structure, originally a restaurant for the Genex employees. It offers a 360 degree view of Belgrade, and the original idea was to build a revolving restaurant but the mechanism was never installed.

"Genex – the General Export Company – was founded in 1952, and grew fast in the post-war climate of socialist Yugoslavia. Its success was a measure of Tito’s international diplomacy: particularly after 1964, when Yugoslavia signed a formal agreement of cooperation with the Soviet Union’s Comecon giving them access to Soviet markets while allowing them to maintain their politically nonaligned status. Genex thrived due to this ability to deal freely with partners in both the East and the West." (D. Richter, Ex Utopia)

The murals painted at the walls and ceilings of the bottom of the residential tower are original, painted by Lazar Vujaklija.

After years of being neglected, nowadays it enjoys the status of one of Belgrade’s iconic buildings. The towers are listed as cultural heritage.

The hallways, staircases and windows of Yugoslav history - this is hotel Jugoslavija.
All of the ideals of modern architecture of New Belgrade & Yugoslavia are embedded in this once spectacularly luxurious building.
Hotel Jugoslavija opened its doors in 1969. and immediately became the most luxurious hotel in Yugoslavia and listed itself in the top 5 largest and most beautiful hotels in Europe.

A part of a modern urban utopia, the huge hotel structure has more than 350 rooms.
In the official brochure, it advertised:
More than 1000 beds, Air conditioning, banquet rooms, restaurants, an English club casino, a swimming pool & spa, beach on the river with a pier for sailboats, a kids' saloon, congress halls, shops, hair salons, an exchange office, a garage with vallet service, a taxi service with Mercedes cars, a dog care.

All high officials and important guests visiting Yugoslavia stayed in the hotel, among them:
Queen Elizabeth II, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Neil Armstrong, W***y Brandt, the Apollo 11 crew, Tina Turner and other royals, artists and athletes.

Hotel Jugoslavija had the biggest chandelier in the world designed and made by Swarovski in 1969.
It features 40.000 Swarovski crystals, 5000 bulbs and it weighs 14 tonnes. It measures 30 by 90 meters (98ft x 30ft). It held the record until 2010.

During the NATO bombing of Belgrade in 1999. the hotel was hit with three missiles and it was left severely damaged and unusable.
Miraculously, the marble spiral staircase and the chandelier both survived, standing among the rubble of the entrance and the main hallway of the hotel.

Today, the hotel is neglected and only partially used as a three-star garni hotel.
It mirrors the fate of the country that shares the name Jugoslavija, as it slowly decays and waits for a better time.

... Did you know??
Yugoverse made it to the most famous race track in the world - the Nürburgring!
Our little Chips the Fića - a little Zastava 750 wrote a little piece of history as the first one ever driven in Green Hell!

It traveled 2000km + in total on a road trip trough Europe before reaching its destination, and the experience on this track is like no other.

Needless to say that people all over Europe were very interested in this little one, and the people on the track gave it a special round of applause after the drive.

The engine is as it was made in the factory, a 750CC "Specijal" edition, produced in Kragujevac Yugoslavia.

One of the many living proofs that our cars are durable and very reliable when taken care of, Chips continues to roam around Europe, spreading knowledge on Zastava cars and our mission here at Yugoverse.

A simple engine takes us on best of adventures!

A tough Russian from Yugoslavia or the American poser from Yugoslavia?
Or should we say a tough Italian/Russian/Yugoslavian or Yugoslav/American..... Wait.

🛠️ Did you know that all of our cars have such a complicated history that sometimes not even the enthusiasts know where and how exactly their cars came to life?

Sometimes they were created from another car (licenced by another manufacturer, based on their model) and then assembled in the third country but sold as a brand from another country?

Like a Lada, one of the most famous Russian brands, that came to life thanks to a licence from Fiat?
The Lada 1200 was made on the base of a Fiat 124.

There are some Ladas that were "made in Yugoslavia" - they have Kragujevac as their birth place in their paperwork.

And then, we have a Yugo Cabrio, that was created by the American engineers from Detroit, based on the original Yugo, and then it was again assembled in Kragujevac and exported to the States?

It was created to be an affordable and attractive small car for any young people looking for a unique ride!
⚠️ Numerous changes and adaptations had to be made to the original Yugo chassis in order to create this sleek look, while keeping the stability of the car and compelling to strict US regulations.
🌞 It's the first convertible to have the roof completely hidden in the trunk, together with the rear windows; and no central bar, so nothing would spoil the "sport" straight line of the car they were aiming for.
✨ All of the windows on the car are made of glass - even the rear one, no plastic involved!
