Streets of Santiago are wild for drivers!
They are often narrow, have lots of steep hills, old colonial houses with balconies that hang over the road, and are a real trial for buses and large vehicles to manoeuvre. However not for this little old 40 year old Moskvitch! 🚘
These Russian cars are sturdy and reliable. Caringly restored and maintained by their Cuban owners on a daily basis in the most ingenious ways.

In Los Hoyos & along a little laneway is the market for curios, herbs and items used for Santeria - the Afro Cuban religion (a blend of the Nigerian Yoruba religion and Roman Catholic).

The bay of Santiago ❤️
Now that you can walk all the way down to the bay along the paved closed street of Enramadas, you can easily get to, and enjoy the huge bay of Santiago.
Take a ferry ride around the bay for a fun couple of hours. Full of locals and happy families, this is one of the different activities you can do to escape the craziness of this big city.
There is much more to Santiago than you know!

The Santería religion is strong in Santiago and is a mix of Catholic and African religious influences.
Developed over 300 years ago when African slaves were banned from practicing their own religion, slaves disguised their religion under ‘acceptable’ Catholic symbols.
Learn all about Afro Cuban religion and traditions on one of our day tours in Santiago....
Here we learnt about the meaning of the important curios made in this workshop, about the ceremonies taking place, and about the offerings made to each deity or god of the Orishas..

Inspired by World Oceans Day and a post by Cuban Adventures Cuba Tours I wanted to post a picture of the beautiful rough coastline of Santiago de Cuba.
This is a photo of the coast near the beach of Caleton blanco looking out over the Caribbean towards Jamaica.
Along this coast some locals spend time cleaning the beaches of plastic pollution and keeping the ocean clean. .
The people from the small local town survive on fishing so this all helps to protect their livelihood.

Madelaine has a temple home in El Cobre, Santiago de Cuba.
His home has been converted into a social cultural project called “Cabildo Cimarron”. The project includes a dance group, a choir, artists, and is led by Madelaine a religious leader. People come from all over the world to consult Madelaine, he is written about in books, filmed, invited to participate in the biggest festival in the Caribe, a collaborator in religious investigations for Cuba, and is a humble simple interesting man who identifies himself as a cimarron. .
We visit his project from the city of Santiago de Cuba. .

Conga de los hoyos.
[This was a meet and greet and classes for a choir].
When slavery was abolished in Cuba something happened in Los Hoyos....black soldiers returning from Cuba’s war of independence, liberated Cuban slaves, Haitians from the Haiti revolution all began to migrate to the suburb.
It became the place for free people of colour and Conga de Los Hoyos was born as an expression of this.
Officially acknowledged in 1902 by the mayor of Santiago.
In 1916 the Chinese corner was added to the singing and drumming to form a unique sound heard nowhere else. .

The impressive large statue of Antonio Maceo is known as “el Titan del Bronce” (the bronze titan).
Beside the statue which happens to be the largest statue in the country, sit 23 raised machetes made from 650 tons of Russian steel.

This was made for the Plaza de la Revolucion in Santiago de Cuba in 1991.
Artist Sculptor .
