Zagorohoria - from our on site recent visit
Located in the Northwest part of Greece, in central Epirus (Ηπειρος) between Ioannina, Konitsa and Metsovo Zagori which means ‘place behind the mountains’ consists of 46 picturesque villages each one of a unique beauty!
More than 1700 plant species are counted by naturalists and there is a rich wild life: 167 species of birds, 230 species of animals amongst which rare mammals such as the brown bear, wolf, deer and others.
The traveller will find rocks, rivers, steep deep canyons, light & blue sky, all shades of green in abundance, beautiful villages built in grey stone, paths and more than 140 bridges. The spectacular Gorge of Vikos (φαραγγι του Βίκου), the second deepest Gorge in the world after the Grand Canyon in USA is here offering breath-taking views. Voidomatis river crosses Vikos Gorge and gives beautiful natural sceneries.
Vikos Gorge is a popular destination for practicing many sports like climbing, mountain-biking, hiking, rafting, kayaking, canoeing, river trekking. Walking excursions can be organised which include the famous stone bridges, the Byzantine monasteries of Zagoria as well as the picturesque villages.
Epirus fresh and rustic cuisine consists of milk products of exceptional quality like fetta, kefalotyri, smoked Metsovone cheese as well as the distinctive galotyri (milk-cheese) which is salty, creamy and consumed with bread or as an accompaniment to pies. You must try among others local grown wild mushrooms, handmade pasta and the tasty Pites (pies) with home made crust (kotopitta, hortopitta, manitaropita etc). Also known are the homemade jams made with fruits grown in the area, handmade bread and orange spoon sweets. Epirus is also famous for its tripouro (pomace brandy), home made liqueurs at many flavours and local wines.

Also for the best portokalopita, karidopita,with home made ice cream, galatopoureko or a home made liqueur please visit ‘Γλυκοπωλειο Μπιμτσα’ – mamadistika glyka, Bimtsa.gr, in Megalo Papigko. There is a queue to sit down and their sweets are just amazing!
