The Czech Republic is home to over 2000 castles and chateaux. The origins of many of them date back to the medieval period. Prague Castle Complex is undoubtedly the shining jewel of them all. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the world’s largest castle complex. Prague Castle and other must-visit beauties like Karlstejn, Cesky Krumlov, Lednice-Valtice, Hluboka and Vltavou, Konopiste and several more are open to visitors. One can take a guided tour inside these castles and chateaux to see and imagine the lifestyle of the noble families from the past centuries. But The Czech Republic also offers galore of options to visitors to LIVE and experience the royal life themselves.

The country is home to many unique hotels—from a 400-year-old palace where Mozart loved to stay, to a 14th-century monastery with an award-winning spa in a former Renaissance chapel. A baroque chateau with deliberate ‘brash’ medieval atmosphere to a 14th-century chateau surrounded by a vast English park. An aristocratic rural manor converted into a charming luxury boutique hotel to a neo-renaissance castle where one can enjoy whisky and cigar tastings. And many more. In our latest brochure, Czech Unique Accommodation & Experiences, we present to you a collection of magnificent hotels housed in properties teeming with rich history and culture. These properties are ideal for honeymoons, family getaways, weddings, celebrations, team-building activities, and more.

Czech Republic’s magnificent West Bohemian Spa Triangle, consisting of the spa towns Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně and Františkovy Lázně, has been bestowed the truly deserving title of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Eight other European spa towns from Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, and Britain along with the Czech towns have been together given the title. The application to be added to the coveted UNESCO Heritage list was drafted together by these seven countries led by Czech Republic.

Czech Republic is usually associated with world famous destinations (also home to UNESCO Heritage sites) like the capital Prague and the fairytale-like medieval gem Cesky Krumlov. But the country is home to many other natural, historical, and architectural UNECO Heritage sites. The Spa Triangle is the latest addition making it the 15th UNESCO Heritage site of the country.

The concept of spa towns began to prosper in 18th century and was favorite of the famous like royals, composers, scientist and so on. These spa towns are very picturesque as they are home to beautiful colonnades, promenades, and parks in addition, of course, to the natural healing springs. The more popular Karlovy Vary has 81 therapeutic mineral springs, the largest concentration in the world. It was founded by king and emperor Charles IV in 14th century. Mariánské Lázně is full of beautiful parks and the architecture is so well preserved that while in the town one can believe they are living inside a dramatic composition of Mozart or Beethoven. Františkovy Lázně is named after its founder, Austrian Emperor Franz I. It too is dotted with pretty colonnades and parks and is so tranquil that the great German Poet Goethe described it as ‘Heaven on Earth.’

The mineral rich natural springs, high quality mud and gases have rich curative properties. They are used to treat various health issues and diseases. But these spa towns are also perfect for wellness holidays to de-stress and rejuvenate mind and body.

Czech Republic is getting ready to welcome tourists again. Tourists from green countries can already be seen in the capital, Prague, enjoying various sights and experiences. Now that most of the monuments, museums and other attractions are open to visitors, we took this opportunity to refresh our knowledge. Last week we, Kompas Praha team, visited the iconic Prague Castle Complex, consisting of 27 buildings, along with our expert tour guide. As always, we were stunned by the beauty of the St. Vitus Cathedral and the 600 years of tenacious effort to complete it. We also visited the Old Royal Palace, the Golden Lane, and St. George’s Basilica. And in a true tourist style we ended the tour with a refreshing cup of coffee at Lobkowicz Palace café’s terrace, known to have one of the best panoramic views of Prague. The feeling that one can never get bored of Prague Castle was shared unanimously. We will continue to re-explore more such attractions. Keep checking this space for more such updates.

Prague is one of Europe’s capitals with the most green spaces for people to enjoy. A lot of them are open to the public, however, so secluded that if you are not well informed you might easily just pass them by without even noticing their beauty. One of them is Vojan Gardens (Vojanovy sady) in Lesser Town (Mala Strana). The garden is considered the oldest partially preserved garden in Prague. Its hidden location seems to have survived from the Middle Ages when it was founded as a monastery garden. Here you can find peace from the bustle of the city on a bench in the shade of trees near a small lake. You can admire the stalactites that decorate the chapel of St. Elijah in addition to the wall paintings and sundial from the 17th century. A wide staircase at the end of the garden leads to the observation terrace with benches and rose pergolas. Peacocks roam freely here and often break into a mesmerising dance making you believe you are part of a fairytale.

Spring is here and Prague is covered in a blanket of greenery embellished with double rainbows, blossoms and dandelions everywhere. This can be attributed to the goal set by Prague to plant million new trees in its territory within eight years to combat climate change. Since embracing this goal, 370,000 new trees have been planted till date which can be admired in the streets, forest parks and gardens in Prague. Spring is also the start for outdoor recreational activities with everyone from couples, families, professional to enthusiasts enjoying hiking, camping and cycling. In this regard the government is planning to invest millions to develop cycling infrastructure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, free-up congested streets and encourage people to exercise more.

We are happy to share some positive news. People within EU will mostly be able to travel for their summer holidays from as soon as June using the EU COVID passport. Czech Republic is now recording lowest number of COVID positive cases since last August and the vaccination drive is going on smoothly and to the satisfaction of the population. Registration and, in some cases, administration of vaccination to those above 35 yrs of age has already started. Registration for those above 30 yrs has started from today.

The Czech heritage sites including hundreds of castles and chateaux are set to open from May 31st. Accommodation facilities like Hotels and Hostels have reopened from 24th May for domestic tourists further boosting the hopes that travel business can start soon. Outdoor areas of restaurants like gardens and terraces are open along with malls, stores and services like spa centres, salons, etc.

We, Kompas Praha, are still very much around. We utilised the ‘down-time’ to research and create new products including undiscovered regions and experiences of Czech Republic suitable for smaller groups and individuals which we strongly feel will be the future of travel. We will be soon sharing these products with you. In the meantime, feel free to reach out to us for any queries you may have. We are ready to create memorable holidays for your clients.

Continuing with our initiative to showcase lesser-known gems of Czech Republic, this time we present Kroměříž.

Kroměříž is a historical town in the South Moravia region, less than an hour from both Brno and Olomouc and about 3hrs from Prague. It is often callen Hanak Athens. It is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The first written mention about Kroměříž dates back to 1100 in an Arabic map called Tabula Rogeriana. It was officially founded in 1260 by Bruno von Schauenburg, bishop of Olomouc. Bruno chose Kroměříž to become his seat and he also made his castle the center of his dominion. The town has two museums, Museum of Kroměříž Region and Karel Kryl's exposition. The town's main landmark is the Baroque Kroměříž Castle. The polygonal tower of the castle is the main landmark as well as the oldest remnant of the old Bishop's Castle. The castle’s interiors, Representative Halls, Sala Terrena, the actual exhibition, Chateau Tower, Chateau garden and Flower garden are worth exploring. The Castles's Gallery has the second most significant collection of paintings in the Czech Republic and is home to The Flaying of Marsyas, a late painting by Titian. Movie buffs will further appreciate this stunning town as the Oscar-winning film Amadeus (1984) and Immortal Beloved, autobiography of Beethoven, were shot here.

Perfect for a Half day trip starting from Brno or Olomouc or an overnight or multiple nights stay for people who want to enjoy Czech countryside.
