Kennedy's hand written pronunciation prompts first his iconic speech in West Berlin on June 26, 1963

In his "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech, John F. Kennedy referenced the Latin phrase "civis romanus sum" to draw a parallel between the rights of a Roman citizen and the freedom of West Berliners. "Civis Romanus sum" translates to "I am a Roman citizen," and was historically used to signify the protection and rights afforded to Roman citizens throughout the empire. Kennedy used this phrase to emphasize that, in the modern world of freedom, all free men are citizens of Berlin, and he, as a free man, identifies with them.

On 10 June 1942, the German Occupation completely eliminated the Czech village of Lidice. In reprisal for the assassination of Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich, 173 males over 15 years of age from the village were executed and another 11 men who were not in the village were arrested and executed. The 184 women and 88 children were deported to concentration camps. A few children considered racially suitable for Germanisation were handed over to SS families and the rest were sent to the Chełmno extermination camp where they were gassed.
The village was set on fire and the remains of the buildings destroyed with explosives. All the animals in the village were slaughtered as well. The remains of the dead in the town cemetery were dug up, looted for gold fillings and jewelry, and destroyed. A German work party removed all visible remains of the village, re-routed the stream running through it and all of the roads in and out. They then covered the entire area the village had occupied with topsoil and planted crops.

It is a little embarrasing, but in 30 years, I've never been to a football match.

It was wild! I never recommended it before, but now, even if you are a casual visitor to Berlin, this is a fun experience.

Once the largest ship in the Royal Navy, the HMS Hood, was sent to her watery grave, today, May 24, 1941. Sunk in battle with the German pocket battleship, the Bismark.
