I came across this incredible video today...it's proprietary to the website so I can't embed it here, but if you click the link it will take you directly to the page. The title of 'Mars Sucks' sounds a bit funny, but the subject matter is quite serious.

https://www.activistalosangeles.com/mars-sucks

I'm all for scientific research, and I'm as interested in learning about our solar system as the next person. And in case it's not obvious, I also love tourism!

But I find the amount of money and effort being spent on space tourism and Mars colonization troubling, at a critical time when doing whatever we can to repair the damage we've caused right here on Earth makes so much more sense.

I would love to see more of the brightest minds, the deepest pockets and the most creative entrepreneurs channel their funds/efforts towards protecting this beautiful planet that is our home, instead of pursuing an uninhabitable 'Planet B'.

I am thrilled and honored to have contributed to a new series of case studies exploring real-world businesses through the perspective of Doughnut Design for Business, an initiative of Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL). These case studies highlight how the deep design of business can enable regenerative and distributive practices.

My case study explores the Cardamom Tented Camp in Botum Sakor National Park, Cambodia. The Camp is a fantastic example of how an ecotourism business can successfully embed conservation and environmental protection into its deep design, while still running a successful business operation. https://doughnuteconomics.org/stories/cardamom-doughnut-design-case-study

The case studies, which span companies small and large, in various industries and on multiple continents, will be helpful to business leaders, entrepreneurs, investors, business education professionals, and anyone else interested in how to use Doughnut Economics in the context of business and investment.

I also recently wrote an article (with accompanying video) on my website about the emerging community-based tourism and ecotourism industries in Cambodia's Cardamom Mountains region, featuring the Camp and several other fantastic operations there. I can wholeheartedly recommend a visit to this beautiful region! https://wanderlustforlife.eu/ecotourism-in-cambodias-cardamom-mountains

The latest article on my website is about indigenous tourism. I tackle some of the issues surrounding this form of tourism, and ways to participate responsibly.

This was challenging to write, partly because I confronted a past indigenous tourism experience of my own which, in hindsight, I realize may have been quite exploitative and probably brought little benefit to the community. It was also challenging because I want to do right by the topic, be honest about its darker side, and provide some useful tips for how to take part in indigenous tourism in a responsible, beneficial way.

The photo is from Isla Taquile on Lago Titicaca, where unfortunately my cautionary tale about indigenous tourism originates.

As always, link to my latest features in bio.

From now until the end of the month, I’m running a poll on my website where you can vote for which place I’ll visit next year! 🌎🌍🌏 You can only vote once (per device, at least 😉) but you can choose up to 3 destinations from the 12 listed. Visit my website and have your say! Link in bio.

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging, also referred to as 3-D laser scanning) has been an absolute game changer for the archaeological community and cultural heritage preservation efforts. The benefits of this technology are clear, but is there also a downside for the Global South communities where some of these scans are conducted?

I looked into this very question last year for an essay towards my MSc degree, and what I learned through this research was an absolute game changer for me in terms of my perception of development, cultural heritage and science in today’s world.

While this essay perhaps relates only indirectly to sustainable tourism, I want to share it anyway because the topic is so engaging. If you have even a slight interest in the subject, I hope you’ll take the time to give it a read and share any thoughts or comments you may have, either here or on my website.

I am a sustainable tourism writer, and this is my confession. Epilogue as prologue: I didn’t realize it, but this is a post I’ve actually been needing to write for a while. Here goes nothing!

Confession continues on my website, link in bio.
