The Ahnenerbe was a department of the SS set up by Heinrich Himmler in 1935. It had two goals - the study of ancient Germanic history and architecture - and the esoteric & magic. The hope was that science and magic, researched well enough, could be reconciled into one "truth". This "truth" would form the foundation of a new German society, which would take its rightful place as the dominant one on the planet, a society which - well I'm sure you've heard it before - last for a…...

The Ahnenerbe was a department of the SS set up by Heinrich Himmler in 1935. It had two goals - the study of ancient Germanic history and architecture - and the esoteric & magic. The hope was that science and magic, researched well enough, could be reconciled into one "truth". This "truth" would form the foundation of a new German society, which would take its rightful place as the dominant one on the planet, a society which - well I'm sure you've heard it before - last for a 1000 years.

It managed 12.

Whilst not explicitly referred to by name, if you think about how in "Raiders of the Lost Ark", the N***s are after the Ark of Covenant - well, it would be those guys in the Ahnenerbe.

I'm planning a little YouTube about them, particularly regarding the Spear of Destiny: but that is for the future. Whilst Himmler was enthusiastic about archaeologists uncovering vestiges of ancient Germanic tribes, Hi**er most assuredly was not. Hi**er found it incompatible with his ideas of an ancient race of superhumans: how was it was that at the same time they were making crude pottery and living in little more than mud huts ("...like in Africa today..."), the great civilisations of Greece and Rome were rising and falling. In a bid to please their master they looked again at the archaeological evidence and came to a bold conclusion: the reason why ancient Germanic culture seemed so paltry compared to say, Classical Greece, is that it was the smartest and brightest Germans who had gone there, developed ancient sciences, philosophy and of course, constructed monuments like the Acropolis. Ach so!

Anyways; the reason for my post: the Ahnenerbe were keen to study the Bayeux Tapestry: the Normans were settled Vikings (or just Norse - since "Viking" is a job description, like "Pirate"), fearsome warriors of Germanic ancestry, who - mirroring N**i goals - were able to carve out a substantial empire. The tapestry was studied by an archaeologist by the name of Kurt Schlabow. Schlabow is long dead but recently in his personal archive, a fragment of the tapestry was discovered:

The fragment, found in the estate of textile archaeologist Schlabow, is set to be returned to France this year.

The guy with his back to me is the German Chancellor Scholz. It was his second visit to the site today. I could not hear what he was saying and he only stayed a minute or two.

I realise now that he was informing the press that the mother and her baby did not make it.

I've received quite a few DM's today: I'm good, friends and fellow guides are all good.

I appreciate your concern regarding this terrorist attack in Munich this morning.

I visited Edinburgh this week. I lived here for nearly 2 years but was so busy with work (In the city, practically any construction work will require archaeological intervention of some sort, so I was kept very busy) that I did not really see much outside of where I lived - Leith. Guard tower in St Cuthberts, built in 1827…...

The last film I made a review of was "Napoleon". I was, to put it mildly, less than impressed. Last month, before I went to Wales to see family, I saw Kate Winslet's film "Lee", based on the wartime experiences of Lee Miller. I was very impressed by this and I'll be reviewing this properly soon. The next film I hope to see is "The Return", starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche (Who last starred together in "The English Patient"). It is based on Homer's "Odyssey" - but there is no Athena to come to the rescue, no Sirens, no Polyphemus....

I need to do a *few* more tours before I can take the business to the next level.

Seriously, Munich is so small, so many guides do similar tours, it is hard to stand out. I ran my first 12 day tour this year; Munich - Nuremberg - Berlin - Prague. I've proved to myself that I can do it and I think it is time to build out the business a bit. One step at a time though. As the insanity that is Oktoberfest nears it end for 2024 (Last day is Sunday), I'm looking towards 2025...

On this day in 1946, the International Military Tribunal (IMT) passed their judgement in Nuremberg.

The trial dealt with surviving members of the upper echelons of the N**i hierarchy. Sentences were debated at length by the judges who were from the UK, France, USA and Soviet Union.

Twelve of the defendants were sentenced to death - Göring, Ribbentrop, Keitel, Kaltenbrunner, Rosenberg, Frank, Frick, Streicher, Sauckel, Jodl, Seyss-Inquart, and Bormann. The latter was tried and sentenced in absentia: he had not been seen since the breakout from the Führerbunker and was widely believed to be at large - whilst in reality, his co**se was moldering away near where Berlin Hauptbahnhof now stands.

On 16 October, ten were hanged, with Göring killing himself the day before with a cyanide pill. How did he get it, when he was searched everyday? That my friends is for another day....

Why “Dark History”?

By and large, the key events that have shaped the human story have not been sugar coated – natural calamity, war, disease, economic issues – just 4 examples of the causes of change in society over the millennia. The story of these changes is our forte´ and we would like to challenge commonly held perceptions of the past. In doing so, we hope to give you not just a tour but an historical experience that you will never forget.

We offer a variety of off-the-peg private tours covering archaeology, architecture, and military, socio-political themes, in both Germany and the UK. We can of course tailor an itinerary to suit your particular needs and interests – whether it is a family trip, school or business group, we can put together a tour for you.

We hope to see you soon,

Taff Simon
