For its majestic and sublime scenery Mt Paektu, the ancestral mountain of the Korean nation, counts among Korea’s celebrated mountains.

Adding beauty to the scenery are rhododendrons that occur here and there on the mountain, where winter temperatures last for more than 200 days in a year.

As a shrub of high medicinal value, the plant is called manbyongcho in Korean, which means a cure for all diseases.

Lake Samji is in Samjiyon County, Ryanggang Province of Korea. It is called so as it has three ponds abreast.

The lake came into being as a river flowing northward in the area of present Samjiyon was blocked by the lava from deep underground during the eruption of volcanoes on Mt. Paektu and its vicinity about one million years ago.

When it was formed for the first time in the Samjiyon area, there were many big and small ponds. After a long time the water of the lake dried up and now only three ponds have been left.

The Samjiyon area is one of the coldest regions in Korea.

There are water plants and carp and other fish of various kinds in Lake Samji.

The lake with clear water and sandy beach is surrounded by a vast sea of thick virgin forests, presenting a spectacular scenery. Particularly, the larch and birch trees standing like a folding screen around the lake are mirrored on the water, adding beauty to the landscape.

Lake Samji is a scenic spot with a good combination of the thick forests and the flower shrubs growing around the lake.

The Ryongmun Cavern is a typical limestone cave of Korea. It was formed through dissolution and erosion of the limestone layer under the ground by groundwater about 480 million years ago.

The natural Ryongmun Cavern is at the foot of Mt. Ryongmun linked to Mt. Myohyang, a celebrated mountain of Korea.

The cavern has two trunks and many branches. A marvellous and mysterious scenery resembling an underground palace is found in the cavern which is tens of metres deep and whose total length is several kilometres.

The cavern has more than 20 attractions such as observatory, Manmuldong or Different Things, Phungnyondong or Bumper Harvest, Paekhwadong or All Flowers, Kumgang Palace, Paektumilyongdong or Secret Camp in Mt. Paektu and Ryongmun Plaza.

If you go to Manmuldong past the observatory showing the magnificence of the Ryongmun Cavern, you can see various stalactites such as the one in the shape of bamboo hat with a legend that it was used by the king only during his visit to a place and the one similar to a stone musical instrument that sounds when beaten, which is reminiscent of a museum.

Phungnyondong has a large stalagmite in the shape of stack formed with water dripping from the ceiling for many years. The stalagmite resembles a rich grain stack and so it is called Bumper Harvest Stack. At present it is about 12.5 metres round and about 4.5 metres high. It continues to grow.

You will reach the Paektumilyongdong via Paekhwadong with beautiful stone flowers in full bloom and the Kumgang Palace as fascinating as the world-famous Mt. Kumgang and as mysterious as the Dragon’s Palace in a myth. There is a stalagmite in the shape of juniper, which is about 2.8 metres high and about 2.16 metres round.

In Posokdong or Jewels you can see a spectacular stalactite reminiscent of an extra-large jewel chandelier. In the scenic spot called Heavenly Paradise you can see the rare Samsonam Falls falling from the place 30 metres high.

Ryongmun Plaza, the last attraction of the Ryongmun Cavern, covers an area of 3,600 square metres. The ceiling and walls of the plaza are decorated with stone flowers which have just begun to bloom.

Peculiar lighting facilities have been installed in every scenic spot of the Ryongmun Cavern, adding mysteriousness and beauty to the cavern. The air is also good in the Ryongmun Cavern. The temperature in the cavern is about 12 degrees centigrade both in summer and in winter. Not only the Korean people but also many foreigners enjoy themselves in the magnificent and marvellous Ryongmun Cavern.

The Korean people have cultivated persimmon tree from long ago.

It can be evidenced by historical data that Diospyros lotus was chosen as a stock of persimmon tree in the 12th century and by old books "Hyangyakgugupbang" and "Tonggukrisanggukjip" compiled in the 13th century.

Persimmon tree is highly resistant to insect and its fallen leaves become quality compost. That's why people have called it useful tree.

In old days, it was cultivated only in southern areas of Korea and some regions of South Hwanghae and Kangwon provinces. But now it is grown in Jongju area of North Phyongan Province and coastal area of South Hamgyong Province, too.

Tens of strains of persimmon including Anbyon, Yonan, Ongjin and Haeju varieties have been cultivated in the DPRK. A ripe persimmon abounds with sugar, pectin, carotenoid and vitamin C. It is used in making such nutritive foodstuffs as fruit punch, sweet rice dish and wine, as well as medicines.

The most famous variety is Anbyon persimmon, which has been widely grown in Anbyon and Thongchon areas of Kangwon Province. It is noted for sweetness and has become one of the local special products.

October and November are persimmon-ripening period in the country.

National Tree of the DPRK

The pine is a tall, needle-leaved tree which makes a moderate demand on soil. The species grows in the vast areas of Korea under 800 m above sea level—except the alpine regions in the northern part of the country. From olden times the Koreans used it for building materials, and its seeds, leaves, barks, resin, sap, sprouts and pollen to make foods and medicines.

The Koreans’ special attachment to the tree does not come from its utility alone. They have regarded it as symbol of their national spirit and mettle, because it stands staunchly despite all rigors of nature while preserving its green foliage in all seasons. Many poets and painters of Korea chose the tree for the subject of their poems, songs, murals and other works of arts.

According to old records, Solgo, a renowned painter in the 8th century, painted an old pine tree on the wall of the Hwangryong Temple so wonderfully that it was enough to make birds fall down from the wall when they tried to alight on it. Many masterpieces by the Korean artists like Kim Hong Do, Ri In Mun and Kim Jong Hui show pine trees. And many of the names of mountains and places in the country are associated with the pine. Wang Kon, founder king of Koryo (918–1392), saw to it that pine trees were planted all about Kaesong to make it the befitting capital city of the dynasty, and named a mountain in it Mt. Songak meaning mountain of pine trees.

The poem "Green Pine on Nam Hill" composed by Kim Hyong Jik, outstanding leader of the anti-Japanese national liberation movement of Korea, became a famous song widely chanted by the Korean people. During the Japanese imperialists’ military occupation of Korea (1905–1945) he devoted all his life to the struggle to win back the country’s independence and sovereignty. He put forth the idea of “Jiwon” (Aim High), which maintained that it was necessary to cultivate national strength if they were to repulse the Japanese imperialists and achieve independence of the country, and that, if so, it was essential to keep an aim high. In the autumn of 1918 he made a poem entitled "Green Pine on Nam Hill", which reflected his faith and determination.

Now the Korean people love to sing pine-themed songs to show their spirit, while vigorously advancing forward along the road of independence and socialism and resolutely frustrating the imperialists’ moves of isolation and suffocation. The song "I Think, Looking at You" produced in 1994 gives an emotional and profound depiction of the spirit of Korea by the description of the staunch appearance of the pine tree which sways invariably with green foliage even in the stormy winter or leaf-fallen autumn.

The pine is the national tree of the DPRK. The custom of planting the pine on holidays, at wedding ceremonies and on other significant occasions is carried on continuously.

29/11/2022

November is kimchi-making season in the DPRK.

It is a tradition for all families in the country to make whole cabbage kimchi, an indispensable part of the Korean people's diet. The cabbage is first salted before being washed. Mixture of condiment made of pepper, onion, garlic, ginger and others and pickled fish is put to the cabbage which is left to ferment.

The ingredient of condiment varies from region to region. Croakers are mainly used in the west coastal area, Alaska pollack in the east coastal area and various kinds of pickled fish in North and South Phyongan provinces and North and South Hwanghae provinces.

There are also kaktugi(diced radish pickles), kimchi wrapped in large cabbage leaves, watery radish kimchi and other kinds of kimchi.

Kimchi is a unique national food of the DPRK which cannot be found in other parts of the world in terms of its nutritional composition and processing method.

The traditional method of making kimchi is still maintained.

Kimchi is famous as one of the five world health foodstuffs for its fresh taste, peculiar aroma, and nutritional and medicinal value.

In Juche 104 (2015), UNESCO registered the Korean custom of making kimchi as a world intangible cultural heritage.
