🗾😍♻️Picking up used body warmers from the primary school of Ogi Town on Sado Island in Japan.

Body warmers are popular in Japan for keeping warm during the cold winter months. In Ogi, we cooperate with the town administration, which has set up two collection points for used heat pockets: one at the town hall and one at the school. The mayor of Ogi, Mr. Satoru Honma, built the collection boxes himself.

😱We have recently picked up 360 kg of used body warmers.

Used body warmers are filled with activated charcoal and iron powder. They are usually a trash product, but we reuse their contents to purify ponds and water reservoirs on Sado Island through a process called sulfide precipitation. In this process, hydrogen sulfide is removed from the water.

Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic gas that kills fish, water plants, and other aquatic animals. It is produced by the chemical reduction of dissolved sulfate coming from the fertilizers used by farmers by bacteria in low-oxygen environments, such as water bodies with a high level of eutrophication.

🤓🌍️Carrying items on the head is a common practice in Africa. It is often a learned skill from a young age, becoming a natural part of daily life.

Our foreign volunteers and interns in Moshi/Tanzania are learning how to do this from our African team members.

🧐The human body is in fact well-equipped to balance and support heavy loads on the head, which can minimize strain on the back and shoulders. This method of carrying also leaves the hands free for other tasks.

Often, folded fabrics such as the Tanzanian kangas are used as a cushion between the load and the head. This helps to stabilize the load by creating a flat and steady surface on the head, reducing the likelihood of the load shifting or falling off while walking.

🐦️🔭👀Chances to spot the Toki bird (Crested Ibis) are best in the early morning and late afternoon hours, especially on cloudy days.

In 1981, there were only 5 birds of the species remaining, due to the excessive use of chemical pesticides in rice fields (among other contributing factors), that resulted in the fact that the Crested Ibis could not find any food. The last five surviving birds were captured on Sado Island in Japan and bred in captivity as part of the government's reintroduction program.

Today, there are once again more than 500 Crested Ibises living in the wild.

You can join activities related to the reintroduction of the Crested Ibis as a volunteer in our Mother Nature Environmental Conservation and Cultural Immersion program on Sado Island, Japan. The 2024 season runs until October 15.

🌊🌞Did you know that approximately 14,000 tons of sunscreen end up in the ocean every year? The chemical oxybenzone, found in many sunscreens, is not only damaging coral DNA but also contributing to coral bleaching and affecting the fertility of fish.

😮👉️But wait! There are reef-friendly sunscreens available that typically contain minerals like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, that can help mitigate these negative effects on vital ecosystems.

🥰🗾⛩️🌱⛺️Some recent images around Chokokuji Temple on Sado Island, which is the base of our seasonal volunteering program in Japan.

Due to the aging and shrinking population in Japan's countryside, many historic temples such as Chokokuji, built in the year 807 by the Buddhist saint Kukai, are lacking funding, and their buildings and artifacts are at risk of being lost.

Chokokuji Temple has three eleven-headed Kannon statues that are declared Nationally Important Cultural Properties, created by the saint himself. Other statues date back to the Heian Period (10th-12th century).

Within the temple's grounds, there are three very large cedar trees to which spiritual powers are attributed. They are estimated to be more than 1,000 years old. There is also a Japanese Umbrella-pine tree that is over 500 years old.

😊👉️Our volunteering program provides funding and labor support from volunteers for the preservation of the temple.

😍🐢🥚A nest of eggs from the Giant Aldabra tortoises was found at the Uwemajo Farmers' Cooperative in Zanzibar and marked by volunteers to prevent the eggs from being accidentally destroyed.

The cooperative has several Giant Aldabra tortoises roaming freely in a large protected area. The tortoises are regularly reproducing. They were given as a gift by the president of Zanzibar to the farmers and originally came from Prison Island/Zanzibar, where four Aldabra Giant Tortoises were brought from Aldabra Island (Seychelles) in 1919 by the British governor of the Seychelles. Prison Island is now overcrowded with these tortoises.

The species is considered vulnerable and is on the IUCN Red List.

🌄😍🦙Bolivia is fascinating in terms of its variety of landscapes: The country is traversed in the western part by two extensive and widely spaced chains of the Andes, reaching altitudes of over 6500 meters.

In between lies the central "Altiplano" at an elevation of 3000 to 4000 meters above sea level, where approximately 80 percent of Bolivians reside and where cities such as La Paz, Oruro, and Potosí are located.

To the east, towards Brazil, lie the sparsely populated tropical lowlands, encompassing the dry savannah landscape of the Gran Chaco and the tropical rainforest of Amazonia.

The base for our programs in Bolivia is the city of Cochabamba, where we arrange volunteering placements, internships, and language lessons. Located in the transition zone between the plateau and the lowlands, Cochabamba enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year and is therefore often referred to as "the city of eternal spring."

😍🗾🌊🌱⛩️🏕️ Summer is likely the best season for a stay on Sado Island in Japan. Under the constant chirping of cicadas, the croaking of frogs in the rice fields, the buzzing of busy bees, the rustle of bamboo leaves, the distant toll of a temple bell, and a cooling ocean breeze, you can spend most of the time outdoors.

There are beautiful beaches with crystal-clear water inviting you to swim and snorkel, forests with refreshing waterfalls, and mountains to hike. Sado also has an enchanting culture and hosts numerous festivals featuring traditional drumming, music, theater performances, and handicrafts such as Sado lacquerware and pottery that you can learn.

Our Sado Mother Nature Program, where you can volunteer in environmental conservation and cultural heritage preservation, and see and learn a lot about rural Japan, runs this season from June 10 to October 14, 2024. You can participate for 1-12 weeks. You will stay in a fully furnished tent in the garden of historic Chokokuji Temple, built in the 8th century.

⚕️🏝️🏥The Mnazi Mmoja Hospital in Zanzibar is the only hospital in East Africa with a dedicated acupuncture department. The service dates back to the 1970s when Zanzibar had a communist government with close ties to China. Since then, Chinese acupuncture specialists are permanently sent to Zanzibar to provide acupuncture treatments and train local healthcare staff in acupuncture.

🤗We can arrange acupuncture internships at the hospital's acupuncture department.

🗾🤩🪷Last week's social meetup event in Tokyo took us to Kamakura, which is just a one-hour train ride from Tokyo. As usual, we invited our current participants in Tokyo to join this excursion, providing them with a chance to meet and interact with young Japanese people who are interested in meeting English-speaking foreigners.

Kamakura is known for the colossal bronze statue of Amida Buddha, located at Kōtoku-in Temple. It is one of the most iconic images of Japan.

Another attraction in Kamakura is Hasedera Temple, known for its eleven-headed statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, and its beautiful gardens.

🌞🛖🐫A very special location where we offer a volunteering and internship program is the desert village of Setrawa in the Thar Desert in Rajasthan, India.

In this stunning location, you will have the chance to experience a very traditional northern Indian village community and contribute to the education of children and women, as well as to women's empowerment.

🤓The villages often feature traditional mud huts known as "bhungas," which are designed to keep the interiors cool in the scorching heat. With temperatures of sometimes more than 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit), the Thar desert is one of the hottest places on earth. People often sleep on the roofs at night. Villagers have developed ingenious methods for conserving and managing water, such as stepwells (baolis) and rainwater harvesting techniques. The lifestyle and practices in these villages highlight human resilience and adaptation to one of the world's harshest environments.

🥰Villages in the Thar Desert celebrate numerous colorful festivals like Teej, Gangaur, and Diwali with traditional music, dance, and rituals. The villages have a strong sense of community, with close-knit families and social structures that play a crucial role in daily life.

🤩The stark beauty of the Thar Desert, with its rolling sand dunes, sparse vegetation, and dramatic sunsets, provides a stunning backdrop to village life.

👇️🤓🐢🏝️How to protect sea turtles as a tourist!

👉️Avoid tourist attractions that offer swimming with marine turtles in captivity or that allow or encourage tourists to touch them.
👉️Keep your distance from turtles on the beach and in the ocean. They like their personal space and become stressed when you get too close.
👉️Report nesting, hatching, or injured turtles you see to marine turtle conservation organisations active in the area.
👉️Never buy or consume turtle products. Ensure the handicrafts you buy are not made of tortoiseshell, and don't eat turtle meat.
👉️Keep your trash with you and ensure it is disposed of properly. Reduce your use of single-use plastics, as they might end up in the ocean and be swallowed by marine turtles.
👉️Skip toxic chemical sunscreens in favor of reef-safe products to protect coral reefs.
👉️Limit the use of artificial or white light on beaches at night. White light can scare away nesting sea turtles or confuse hatchlings, causing them to run away from the water and toward your light. Choose accommodation that use turtle-friendly lights. Even bonfires on the beach might have the same negative effect on turtles.
👉️Stay at eco-friendly lodges that don't pollute the ocean.
👉️Avoid volunteering programs with turtles that keep turtles in captivity.
👉️Don't let your dogs run freely on the beach, as they might disturb nesting turtles or dig up turtle nests.
