🌿🐾 Meet the Black and Rufous Elephant Shrew! 🐾🌿
These tiny, speedy, insectivorous creatures live in the forests of Zanzibar and Tanzania. Their English name "elephant shrew" comes from a perceived resemblance between their long noses and the trunk of an elephant, and their superficial similarity with shrews.
However, they are in fact more closely related to elephants than to shrews.
Even though they are not rodents and only feed on insects, these elusive mammals face threats from human pest control targeting rodents. 🚫🐀
As part of our Mother Nature program at Jozani Forest in Zanzibar, we have launched a population survey to gather crucial data for conservation efforts. 📊🌍
🔍 Have you ever spotted one in the wild? Let us know! 👀💬
✨ On February 9, we explored the historic Sensoji Temple, Tokyo’s oldest and most famous Buddhist temple, and enjoyed the vibrant street food and souvenir shops around it. As participant of our program in Tokyo, you can join social meetup events, our cultural workshops, and our Japanese-English language exchange! 🌸🍡🏮

🌿🍃 In India, you can still find a traditional and sustainable solution used for serving take-away food and drinks that has been in place for thousands of years: Leaf plates and bowls, made from dried leaves, and clay cups (kulhar).
These eco-friendly options are fully compostable or recyclable. Leaf plates return to nature as compost, while clay cups can be crushed and reused. A simple yet effective way to embrace sustainable living! 🌍♻️

🐢💚Hatchlings expected soon!
Something is stirring in the sand of the first sea turtle nest of the season, which was safely relocated to the Matemwe hatchery on December 20th. This means that at any moment now, the first baby turtles (hatchlings) could emerge and, with the help of our dedicated team and amazing volunteers, begin their journey to the ocean! 🌊✨
We currently have five more nests expected to hatch between end of February and beginning of April. Book your program participation to witness the hatching!
The main nesting season in Zanzibar is expected to be until June (even though occasional nesting occurs throughout the year), and hatchlings are expected until beginning of August.
It's crucial that hatchlings are released immediately after hatching, as this is when they imprint on the beach and develop their ability to navigate using the Earth's magnetic field. This natural process ensures that, years later, they will return to the same beach to lay their own nests.

🌊🐢Turtle Hatchling Release on 14th and 16th September 2025
This weekend, we released the last nest from the hatchery. The first half of the nest hatched on Saturday night, and the second half on Monday afternoon. Turtles should be released immediately after hatching to ensure their best chance of survival. In the wild, hatchlings instinctively head toward the ocean as soon as they emerge from their nests. This critical journey helps them avoid predators and strengthens their muscles for swimming. Delaying their release can increase the risk of predation and disrupt their natural imprinting process, which is vital for guiding them back to their birthplace when they reach maturity.
Immediate release into the ocean helps preserve their natural behavior and supports the long-term health of sea turtle populations. Through the Matemwe program and our partnership with Under the Wave and their turtle nesting center, we are actively contributing to the growth of the turtle population.
