The Ecopia business plan began with a promise to Dophine, our virtual business angel. I pledged to transform $1,000 into $25,000 using my intellect and dedication, driven by my PhD. Although I aimed to achieve this in six months, it took me eight. This accomplishment stands as a testament to the power of that promise.
Dophine entered my life during the early days of Ecopia. Meeting her in Ethiopia with my brother Erimas was a pivotal moment. Her influence on my work was profound. Making a promise to her felt like making a promise to myself, a driving force behind my actions.
Our connection deepened when we visited her impressive home. Although I never drove a Rolls-Royce up the half-kilometer entrance, the house seemed to have hosted such grandeur in the past. The sound of the road and the sense of majesty remain vivid memories.
Our bond extends beyond our generation. When our children were in kindergarten, my son Felix remembers Dophine vividly, while my daughter Josi, though present, does not recall as clearly. Dophine exemplified virtues and universal human values through her way of living. Our relationship grew through our shared creative endeavors.
During our visits to her place, I saw her co-creating with my brother in art. It became clear that co-creation is the essence of a fulfilling life, far surpassing mere integration. We had deep philosophical discussions about the meaning of life and how to express it through our work. Dophine’s wisdom was invaluable, shaping our artistic journey.
Our bond continues through the impact Dophine had on us. I learned two key lessons: first, making a promise to someone of value is like making a promise to yourself, driving your actions. Second, co-creation fosters a deep sense of belonging, far more meaningful than simple integration.
Daphe’s legacy of kindness, creativity, and philosophical wisdom lives on through our creations and in the lives and works of our children. Her spirit is woven into our stories and endeavors, a beacon of inspiration that will forever guide us. Though she is no longer with us, she remains a cherished part of our lives, deeply missed but never forgotten
