Today marks a very special day on Germany's highest mountain - the Zugspitze! On December 20, 1952, an avalanche killed four border police officers and a Vorarlberg ski mountaineer on the so-called Zugspitzgatterl. The traditional Gatterlmesse has therefore taken place annually on the Zugspitzplatt since 1953. The service is dedicated to the victims of the avalanche accident of 1952, all members of the Bavarian police who died in the line of duty, as well as all mountain and ski athletes who had fatal accidents in the mountains.

In the north-eastern part of the Lattengebirge, the striking Rotofen towers rise out of the forest and form a rugged contrast to the otherwise rather lovely landscape of the Lattengebirge. The three rotary kiln towers form a silhouette reminiscent of a woman lying on her back. This is how the Rotofen got its nickname Sleeping Witch. The witch with her distinctive nose and bosom can be seen both from Bischofswiesen in the south-east and from Bayerisch Gmain in the Reichenhall Basin in the north-west.

Come and join me for a day trip to Hi**ers tea house - the Eagles Nest!

Find out more about the history of the Kehlsteinhaus located on a ridge atop the Kehlstein, a 1,834 m (6,017 ft) subpeak of the Hoher Göll that rises above the town of Berchtesgaden. It was commissioned by Martin Bormann in the summer of 1937. Paid for by the N**i Party, it was completed in 13 months. Twelve workers died during its construction.

The Eagle's Nest was used exclusively by members of the N**i Party for government and social meetings. It was visited on 14 documented instances by Adolf Hi**er. Today, it is open seasonally as a restaurant, beer garden, and tourist site.

Wurmeck - Set in the bustling Marienplatz in Munich, is part of the New Town Hall. Built in 1906, this Neo-Gothic style tower features a sculpture of the mythical creature, lindworm. This stunning bronze sculpture was made by Anton Kaindl. The tower depicts the battle against the dragon-like creature. According to the legend, due to the dragon’s presence, the residents in the city of Munich were plagued with death and sufferings. Many brave men fought against the dragon and city was brought back to its former glory.

Ludwig I or Louis I was King of Bavaria from 1825 until the 1848 revolutions in the German states. When he was crown prince, he was involved in the Napoleonic Wars. As king, he encouraged Bavaria's industrialization, initiating the Ludwig Canal between the rivers Main and the Danube. In 1835, the first German railway was constructed in his domain, between the cities of Fürth and Nuremberg, with his Bavaria joining the Zollverein economic union in 1834. After the July Revolution of 1830 in France, Ludwig's previous liberal policy became increasingly repressive, in 1844, Ludwig was confronted during the Beer riots in Bavaria. During the revolutions of 1848 the king faced increasing protests and demonstrations by students and the middle classes. On 20 March 1848, he abdicated in favour of his eldest son, Maximilian.

Devil's Footstep, at the entrance of the world famous Frauenkirche. This is a black mark resembling a footprint, which according to legend was where the devil stood when he curiously regarded and ridiculed the 'windowless' church that Halsbach had built. (In baroque times the high altar obscured the one window at the very end of the church, that visitors can see now when standing in the entrance hall.)
