The season of the giants is still going on!

We still have Humpback whales and Fin whales around Pico island! They stop here each year in spring time to feed and to gather some energie to reach their feeding grounds in the north. This june they seem to stay longer to enjoy the food. There is still a lot of plankton is the water to start the food chain. Also the turtles and dolphins are benefiting :)

Blue whales usually don´t show their tail?
They usually don´t do spy hopping?
They usually don´t breach?
and they usually don´t play around?

Well in the waters around Pico island they do sometimes :D
And Pico Sport witnessed everything, that this young blue whale was doing. A great event!

Season of the giants doesn´t mean, that there are no dolphins around...

During the last trips we always saw the curious common Dolphins, the big Bottlenose Dolphins or the shy and beautiful Risso´s Dolphins.
As well as in the whales, pictures of the fin of these acrobatic animals can be used for Fotoidentification, because the pattern is as individual as a human fingerprint. The best part comes now: Here it is possible to swim with wild and free dolphins, not captured in an ugly tiny bassin of a Dolphinarium ...

Again a humpback whale infront of pico island. What can I say...

I love this guys... But one question remains. Who is observing whom?

:)

Whoohooooooo :D:D:D:D

We love humpback whales! Today we were observed by two humpback whales!!! They check us out. Feeding, playing with dolphins, Spyhopping, Lobtailing, Breaching, waving etc. - we saw all kind of diffrent behavior patterns. The picture t show you how hunpback whales enjoy their sweettime after a giant meal!

Check it out. Now is the best time to go out with pico sport to see ballen whales. I can´t say it often enough :)

They are here and they are hungry :)

The last days we saw Sei whales and Fin whales feeding at the water surface. There is so much phytoplankton (small algae) in the water that is eaten by zooplankton (f.e. Krill) that is eaten on the other hand by big animals like f.e. the Sei and the Fin whale.

And if you are lucky enough to see them feeding sometimes you see them showing there Baleens, which they use to filter their food out of the water. Fantastic! :)

One of the most beautiful animals is the blue whale.

This guy here was following a strict course. It was going all the time to the direction of 270° - right into the west. It didn´t change it´s course at all while Pico Sport was observing it - the biggest animal that has ever lived on earth ... They are now here at the coast of pico island :D

Yesterday Pico Sport was going out to the see together with a bunch of lucky people. The whole lot brought an enormous amount of luck with them.
We met two beautiful and giant blue whales. Afterwards 4 Sei whales preying on a school of small fishes in front of the south coast of Pico island.
Furtehrmore we met again a very playful humpack whale, which was showing us its fluke again and again and again ... and every now and than we saw curious Common dolphins.

A great trip :)

7 species in one trip!

Today pico sport went out for one memorable whale watching trip! We could find everywhere whales, dolphins and rainbows ...

Blue whales
S***mwhales
Fin whales
Humpback whales
Common dolphins
Bottlenose dolphins
Risso´s dolphins

Seven species in total and three of them were baleen whales. They are all now in front of the coastline of pico (Azores), enjoying themselves :)

16/04/2014

They are here!

The season of the giants has officially started :D

Beside the coasts of the azores. The Baleen whales, like for example the Blue whale, the Fin whale and the Sei whale, are usually seen in the azores from march to june as they follow the anual "atlantic spring bloom". So far we have seen Baleen whales on every whale watching trip! A nice start!!!

How do you differentiate between individual s***m whales?

Look at the tail!
The pattern of a fluke of a s***m whale is as unique as a finger print. Pictures of flukes are used in different scientific projects all over the world to get knowledge about possible traveling routes of these giants. For example Andrea Steffen, a behavior biologist and member of the National Geographic Society, is comparing pictures of flukes in the Caribbean and around the Azores. If you have ever been on the Azores and taken pictures of the s***m whale flukes or if you are planning such a journey send your pictures with accurate information where you have taken them and when to [email protected] or get further information at

How to distinguish between a cheeta and a Leopard?

1. The body:

the Cheeta is a slim and fast runner with a long tail, whereas the leopard is more compact

2. The pattern.

the cheetah has black dots, whereas you can find black circles on the leopard like in the followng picture. You can meet these beautiful and rare animals for example in the Samburu Nationalpark. How to get there? Check http://www.kenya-wildlife-safari.com/home_e.html

5 weeks in Kenya. It´s a great time. The biodiversity is enormous and you get so close... Two days ago for example, we had to evakuate our breakfast table because of an elephant visiting our camp (check the pictures :) ) in the "elephant bedroom" in the samburu Nationalpark. A normal and daily scene there ... Do you want to visit Kenia? If so, check http://www.kenya-wildlife-safari.com/home_e.html
