New 2024 dates for the Camino de Santiago group travel now available - The last 100 km on the Camino Francés from Sarria to Santiago.

Why is cargo travel not really a "budget" way of traveling?

Traveling by cargo ship has a reputation of being cheap, since the main business is transporting cargo, and the ships run anyway, right?

Compared to commercial cruise ships, which offer much more comfort and entertainment, passage on a cargo ship, where the amenities are quite basic, should be much cheaper, right?
So why is it not necessarily the case?

Well, there are several reasons:
Firstly, cargo ships are primarily designed to carry cargo, not passengers. As a result, there are typically only a very small number of cabins available for passengers, sometimes as few as one, usually maximum five, which increases prices per passenger.

In contrast, cruise ships are designed specifically for passengers, and they have a much larger number of cabins available. This means that they can accommodate a much higher number of guests, which in turn allows to keep prices per passenger lower.

Additionally, the bureaucracy and regulations associated with international cargo shipping increases the cost of travel. Cargo ships have to comply with a vast array of safety, security, and environmental regulations, even more so if carrying passengers, which can result in significant costs.

Extra food, water and fuel per passenger need to be factored in, depending on the duration of the journey for up to several weeks, and working on the ship to set off these costs to reduce the travel fare is generally not possible due to huge safety, liability and insurance concerns.

Finally, a very important aspect of traveling by cargo ship that puts the price into perspective is that it is not only a means of transportation, but also accommodation at the same time, providing a very special experience true to the motto "The journey is the destination".
