Sumatra’s rich tapestry of traditions is shaped by the many tribes and ethnic groups that call this island home, each contributing its unique customs, languages, and ways of life.

We want to give you an insight to some of the most fascinating tribes in Sumatra and their cultural highlights: Part 1 – the Batak people.

Predominantly residing around Lake Toba in North Sumatra, they are one of the most well-known ethnic groups on the island. They are divided into several subgroups, including the Toba Batak, Karo, and Simalungun.

🛖 Traditional Architecture: The Batak’s distinctive houses, called Rumah Bolon, are easily recognizable with their steeply pitched roofs and intricately carved wooden designs.

🎶 Music and Dance: The Batak have a rich musical tradition, often centered around the gondang (drum) and other traditional instruments. Their dances, performed during weddings and festivals, are energetic and deeply symbolic.

💡 Cultural Practices: The Batak are known for their strong kinship systems and cultural ceremonies, including the Mangokkal Holi, a sacred ritual of relocating ancestors‘ bones.

Overnight in a jungle camp in Bukit Lawang: What to Expect 🌿

Staying overnight on your jungle trek is an unforgettable adventure that brings you closer to nature like never before. For us, it’s a top bucket list thing to do.

Here’s what’s waiting for you:

🏕️ Accommodation: Sleep in a semi-open shelter with mosquito nets and rain tarps. Minimalist, but comfortable enough to immerse yourself in the wild.

🏞️ Nature’s essentials: No electricity or running water – but who needs that when you can refresh in the river and enjoy the serenity of the jungle?

💧Filtered Water: We use the outdoor filter from Waterdrop, which effectively removes up to 99% of all harmful substances, dirt and bacteria. You can refill your bottles at the camp.

🌿 Relaxation time: After your trek, unwind with a swim in the cool river, sip tea, or simply soak in the sounds of the jungle.

🍛 Dinner under the stars: Feast on a delicious Indonesian meal, served by candlelight, with the jungle’s symphony as your soundtrack.

2025 Travel Inspiration: 5 Must-See Spots in Sumatra! 🌋🐘

Sumatra is calling – and trust us, it’s worth answering! From lush rainforests to stunning coastlines, this island is packed with unforgettable sights.

Here are 5 highlights you simply can’t miss this year:

1️⃣ Lake Toba – The world’s largest volcanic lake, perfect for nature lovers & those craving peace. Visit Samosir Island in the middle of the lake to explore Batak culture, ancient stone chairs, and traditional dances. Don’t miss a boat ride during sunset – pure bliss! 🌅

2️⃣ Bukit Lawang – Jungle treks & wild orangutans – yes, please! 🐒 This charming little village on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park is the place to spot these incredible creatures in their natural habitat. Beyond wildlife, enjoy a laid-back vibe with friendly locals, delicious food, and scenic river views. Our happy place.

3️⃣ Mentawai Islands – Want to immerse yourself in a truly unique experience? 🌴 Live with the Mentawai tribes and learn about their fascinating way of life. Advanced wave chasers will find world-class surf spots here, but there’s more: crystal-clear waters, pristine beaches, and untouched rainforests. Raw, off-the-grid adventure. 🏄‍♂️

4️⃣ Harau Valley – Imagine standing in a lush valley surrounded by towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls – a dream! 🌿 It’s the ideal spot for nature lovers, climbers, and photographers. Wander through rice paddies, trek to hidden waterfalls, and soak in the serenity of rural life. Tip: Stay in one of the traditional wooden homestays for an authentic experience!

5️⃣ Mount Sibayak – Adventure seekers, this one’s for you! ⛰️ An early morning hike up this active volcano is rewarded with stunning panoramic views and the sight (and smell!) of bubbling sulfur vents. Don’t forget to bring a jacket – it can get chilly at the top before sunrise! After your hike, relax in the nearby hot springs to soothe those tired muscles.

Did you know? The name ‘Orangutan’ comes from the Malay and Indonesian words orang (person) and hutan (forest), meaning ‘person of the forest’—an amazing title for these clever, tree-dwelling primates who play a key role in keeping the jungle thriving. As one of our closest relatives, the Sumatran Orangutan shares around 97% of our DNA and has a fascinating ability to use tools and communicate through gestures. 🧡

How to find the perfect itinerary for Sumatra?

Did you know that if you laid Sumatra across Europe, it would stretch from the UK to Greece? 😲 That’s a LOT of ground to cover! So we totally understand if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the idea of planning your Sumatra trip, especially if it’s your first time on our favorite Indonesian Island.

But no worries, we’ve got your back! Here are some helpful tips to create the ideal Sumatra itinerary based on your travel style, time frame, and the kind of experiences you love.

1️⃣ When are you travelling?

Sumatra is beautiful year-round, but the dry season (April to October) is great for beaches, while the rainy season (November to March) offers lush green jungles with fewer tourists!

2️⃣ How much time do you have?

🌿 Up to 4 days? Stick to one spot, like a jungle trek in Bukit Lawang or a beach escape to Pulau Weh.
🌿 5-6 days? Mix wildlife and culture with stops like Medan, Bukit Lawang, and Berastagi.
🌿 7-12 days or more? Explore the full beauty of Sumatra! Combine jungle, beaches, and cultural spots for a complete adventure.

3️⃣ What do you like?

Each destination offers something unique, so mix and match based on your preferences. Whether it’s hiking, surfing, or cultural exploration – Sumatra has it all.

4️⃣ Don’t underestimate travel times!

One thing many travelers don’t realize is how long it takes to get around Sumatra. The roads are often winding and mountainous, so even short distances can take a while. For example, Medan to Bukit Lawang is only 90 km but takes around 4 hours. So if you want to visit multiple places, make sure to plan accordingly.

🗺️ If you don’t want to worry about your itinerary, let us do the planning. Simply tell us your budget, duration of your stay and what you’re looking after – we’re happy to customize the perfect tour for you!
