🐢 Our resident sea turtles are nesting! Early in the morning last week we spotted these sea turtle tracks on our beach. A female turtle had made her way up the beach to lay her eggs before heading back out to the ocean. We have calculated the dates and the nest is due to hatch between 31st December 2024 and 1st January 2025 - possibly the first Selayar sea turtles of 2025!!

🐟 Just another day underwater in Selayar! This was taken at one of our favorite and most southerly dive sites - Appatanah Cave (it's a beautiful 5-meter-long swim through). The entrance to the swim through is often shrouded with glassfish and you never know what you might spot inside!

📸 It also makes an awesome wide angle underwater photography subject!

🏝 We love to walk the length of our beach to see what critters are making it 'home' and to check for turtle tracks in the sand. Our beach is also one of the best beaches for shell collecting in South Sulawesi!

📸 This little crab was enjoying the shade (and hiding) behind a leaf while looking a little bit curious about the camera at the same time!!

🐋 We are preparing to open for our 2024/2025 season on Friday and we've already had some incredible marine life sightings from breaching pygmy blue whales (approx 20 meters in body length), leaping manta rays, our resident schooling jacks under the jetty, and turtles nesting underneath the restaurant!!

🐢 Turtle time!! This guy was taking a break - and the opportunity to pose for the camera!

🐢 We are preparing to open for our 2024/2025 season on Friday and already we have seen that our resident green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) are thriving in numbers - multiple sightings of turtles in front of the jetty and in the Selayar Dive Resort Bay!

🐢 We've even seen turtles nesting and laying their eggs underneath the restaurant, and two days ago there were telltale turtle tracks from the edge of the water, up the beach and back down. We've identified where the nest is and calculated that the eggs will be hatching around 31st December/1st January - they may be the first Selayar turtles of 2025!!

🐠 Schooling jacks! So many fish this season including schooling juvenile jacks underneath our jetty and HUGE schools of jacks at Shark Point (so very happy sharks too....🦈 !!)

🌴 Busy, busy,busy in the resort today - we are adding a brand new roof to our restaurant for the new season and it is almost finished! In keeping with South Sulawesi construction, and our efforts to be as sustainable as possible, we are once again opting for a beautiful traditional cassava leaf roof. The cassava leaves are extremely watertight, keep the restaurant cool, and look stunning from the inside too! We can't wait to see it finished!

🛥 We have arrived back in the resort and it's looking as beautiful as ever! On the boat ride here we already saw flying fish and a manta ray leaping through the surface right in front of us!

🐋 This morning we were also treated to a whale swimming by the front of the jetty - and this is all before we even get in the water!!

🌴 We are busy today getting the resort ready for opening and we are excited to welcome our first guests of the season on November 8th! Something tells us that this will be an epic season!

🐠 This is just one of the beautiful giant clams (Tridacna gigas) that we have at our dive sites. Some of these ancient creatures are as big as bathtubs!

🪸 Did you know that the giant clam is listed as 'vulnerable' by the IUCN? So we are extremely fortunate to see such healthy individuals!

🦀 We love that candy crabs (AKA Soft Coral Crabs or Hoplophrys oatesii) have such incredible camouflage! The crabs' sticky extensions on their legs and bodies mimic the corals' polyps and some crabs even attach a piece of coral to their shell.

👀 These macro crustaceans are just millimeters big (or small!!) but if you look carefully, they are perfectly formed.
