King of the whitewater!

Surfing is one of my favourite ways to connect to nature, even if the swell is high and you only dare to play around in the whitewater. In and around Itacaré are some of Brazil's most beautiful surf spots for all levels. In this case, we did a small rainforest hike to get down to Praia da Engenhoca, where a blackwater stream meets the ocean and you can enter the salt and freshwater alike, between ridges of protected Atlantic rainforest and swaying palm trees.

The Jalapão Region lies in the heart of Brazil, where a state named Tocantins was founded and 'developed' since 1988. It is characterized by bizarre rock formations, different types of cerrado (savanna) vegetation and a very low population density. This is an amazing natural playground for hiking, canyoning, enjoying the crystal clear fervedouro springs, rafting in the wild rivers of potable water or spotting rare animals. I simply loved it!
