Chemnitz, stad in de buurt
💬On June 1, 1990, the city of Chemnitz in Saxony got its old name "Chemnitz" back.
➡️ From 1953 until 1990, Chemnitz went by the name "Karl-Marx-Stadt". The citizens took a vote and 76% voted for going back to Chemnitz.
🧍Chemnitz is the third largest city of Saxony after Dresden and Leipzig and has around 248,000 residents.
🏞The city gets its name from the river Chemnitz that runs through the town which in in return is derived from the old Sorbian word "Kamenica" or "kamjenica" meaning Steinbach or stone brook.
📌Chemnitz was first mentioned in writing as Kameniz in 1143.
🎨 Chemnitz was named "Kulturhauptstadt Europas 2025" (European Capital of Culture).
🖋The city's name is now also part of the new "Buchstabiertafel" (spelling alphabet): C wie Chemnitz.
