The Merengue of the Dominican Republic

Merengue is a type of music and dance originating in the Dominican Republic which has become one of the most popular genres throughout Latin America and major cities in the United States. The etymology of its name is much disputed. It may derive from the French dessert meringue, but it is also likely to be related to similar West African words related to dance and music.

Merengue was first mentioned around the middle of the 19th century. In the Dominican Republic the genre was promoted by Rafael Trujillo, the dictator from the 1930 to 1961, who turned it into the country's national music and dance style. In the United States it was first popularized by New York-based groups and bandleaders like Rafael Petiton Guzman, beginning in the 1930s, and Angel Viloria y su Conjunto Típico Cibaeño in the 1950s. It was during the Trujillo era that the merengue "Compadre Pedro Juan", by Luis Alberti, became an international hit and standardized the 2-part form of the merengue.

Carnival in the Dominican Republic is celebrated during the whole month of February, although some towns celebrate it during March, Holy Week and August.

The festival usually climaxes around February 27, Dominican Independence Day. This carnival is distinguished by its colorful costumes, that symbolize many religious and traditional characters such as Calife, Guloya or the famous Diablo Cojuelo. It is celebrated in most of the island, each town adding its own twist or creating their own characters and groups. It is enjoyed by young and old throughout the country since many of the groups are created by families, companies, and friends.

It is believed that this celebration was brought by Christopher Colombus when he came to America.[citation needed] The Christians and the known follower Maximo De La Rosa would let their slaves have some diversion so that they got the "wild" out of their system, but also the slaveowners would enjoy this festivities. Since Christians considered this a "pagan" celebration they added their own inflections because they wanted to enjoy it.

Carnival has been celebrated in the Dominican Republic since the mid-1500s. Evidence of this has been found in the ruins of La Vega Vieja (near the present day La Vega) showing that celebrations were held here before they were celebrated in Santo Domingo. The celebration consisted that the resident dressed themselves as Moors and Christians.

Though it is not known for certain, it is thought that the colony of Santo Domingo was the first place in the Americas to show a pre-Lenten costume. The celebration became a way to escape from the rigid religious traditions. By the late 1700s the carnival became a major celebration in the colony. Then in February 27, 1844 when the Dominican Republic won its independence from Haiti celebration gained a bigger splendor, because the Dominicans were celebrating their independence. Making February a very festive month in the Dominican Republic.

Dominican Style Chivo picante (Spicy goat meat stew)

We have to admit that goat meat is not well-known, or very popular in the western world. No sure what the cause might be. Perhaps goat meat does not lend itself to the type of economy of scale that is possible with beef.

In the Caribbean, however, this is not the case: goat meat is a popular choice, a special treat even. In the Dominican Republic the Northwestern region is well-known for its famous dish: Chivo guisado lineo, a spicy stew of tender and flavorful goat meat.

The secret t this regional delicacy is fresh, wild oregano and flavorful and fierce Scotch bonnet peppers. Of course the local lore tells us that the goat feeds from the wild oregano, seasoning themselves while they still breathe and walk. How convenient.

So, if you want to try the original, the best stew got in the world (we may be exaggerating, but only a bit), travel to Montecristi, home of the free-range, organic ingredients that make this dish famous throughout our country.

Barahona, Dominican Republic

The Barahona Province with its capital Santa Cruz de Barahona is one of these special Dominican destinations we often recommend to experience parts of the Dominican Republic that are not yet discovered by mass tourism. The region’s pristine coastline, national parks, lakes and abundance of (endemic) flora and fauna make it an ideal location for almost any type of vacationing.

The incredible raw beauty of the undeveloped beaches, like the totally isolated beach of Bahia de Las Aguilas, the Barahona- Enriquillo coastal highway that has been described as one of the most scenic and spectacular coastal roads in the Caribbean and the proximity to 5 spectacular national parks and various mountain forests, make this region one of the best kept secrets of the Caribbean.

Want to come and check out the Dominican Republic? These aren’t the only world class attractions in the DR. Visit our condos in Cabarete and villas in Sosua and find out why this island is so popular!

07/07/2014

The Dominican Republic has become the ultimate paradise for cigar lovers. Since the the Spanish arrived in 1492, to***co has been a driving part of both the island's history and culture. The Taino, the first inhabitants of the island, were using to***co on the island in their social, religious and ceremonial activities centuries before the Europeans arrived.

It is no secret that when Fidel took over Cuba many prominent Cuban cigar families took their know how and fine seeds to the D.R. This infused more quality to an already to***co producing island. Today the Dominican Republic is known throughout the world as a place where the cultivation and curing of to***co and the manufacture of ci**rs is an art form.

There are cigar shops all over the place. Most hotels have a cigar market once a week when they invite cigar vendors to set up shop inside the hotel. Often they will roll ci**rs right there and then.

However if you are serious about ci**rs and it is part of coming here, you will be best off on the north coast (POP) where you will be close to the center of the island. This is where the best To***co is produced due to the fertility of its soil. The Cibao valley and the Santiago area is la creme de la creme for ci**rs. This is where the art form was developed and formed for centuries, from father to son.

It's not difficult to see the level of attention to detail that goes into making a Dominican cigar. Even if you're not an expert, you will appreciate the amount of dedication that goes into making each cigar.
