Through its success in hosting the 7th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, 🇩🇿 presented its credentials as an influential player in gas diplomacy, which turned into a trump card for producing and exporting countries in defending their interests, in light of a global context fraught with the struggle to supply gas, which has become an obsession for the Western countries in particular.

The members asserted that “by 2050, demand for natural gas is expected to rise by a staggering 34%, significantly increasing its share of the global energy mix, from the current 23% to 26%,” an analysis consistent with that provided by the IEA which said that global gas demand is expected to witness “strong growth” in 2024 compared to 2023, supported by expectations of cold temperatures and lower prices.

The 🇩🇿 State-owned group SONATRACH and the 🇳🇴 company Equinor have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cooperate on managing and reducing (GHG) emissions released during joint activities in .

The MoU aims notably to initiate useful steps towards reducing GHG emissions, searching for low-carbon energy solutions and effecting the transition. The agreement goes a step further in providing for the continuation of joint studies to identify the possibility of supporting , its use and storage on the In Salah and In Amenas sites.

According to a report published by the Organisation of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPAEP) www.oapecorg.org, 🇩🇿 exported a total of 13 million tonnes of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in 2023 compared to 10.2 million tonnes in 2022, an annual growth rate of 26.1%.

🇹🇷 imported the highest volume of from Algeria, at more than 4.3 million tonnes, a figure that goes beyond the 3.2 million tonnes per year on which the two countries had previously agreed.

The list of major importers of also includes 🇫🇷, which is second on the list having imported 3.2 million tonnes, 🇮🇹 in third place with a total of 1.8 million tonnes, 🇪🇸 in fourth place with a total of 1.4 million tonnes and 🇨🇳 with a total of 0.4 million tonnes.

🇩🇿 oil and gas group SONATRACH signed a ten-year agreement with the 🇬🇧 company National Grid LNG Isle Of Grain Kent to extend long-term storage and redelivery capacity for Algerian Liquefied Natural Gas ( ) at the latter’s terminal from January 2029. The agreement is for 125 GWh/d of import capacity of, equivalent to 3 million tonnes per year of LNG.

Located on the Isle of Grain in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, the Grain terminal is currently being expanded to store and deliver enough to meet up to 33% of British gas demand.

The agreement with Sonatrach is the first to be announced under Grain LNG's competitive auction process which was launched in September 2023 for 9 mtpa of existing capacity. This was designed for parties who want to acquire a substantial stake in the terminal at a reduced cost and with shorter contract lengths when compared to new-build projects. The Grain LNG terminal is owned and operated by National Grid.

☀️ Renewable Energy Goals:

- Algeria aims to generate over 15 GW of solar electricity as part of its plan for energy transition. The initial phase, starting in Q1 2024, targets 3000 MW.

- This transition also sets the stage for a green hydrogen program with a projected production capacity exceeding 40 Twh.

🔋 Energy efficiency:

ADES Holding secures 79mn USD contracts with Sonatrach

The 🇸🇦 drilling company ADES Holding Company has announced that it has been awarded two contracts with ’s 🇩🇿 State-owned SONATRACH worth more than 296mn SAR (79mn USD).

The contract period is five years for two land drilling platforms within the company’s fleet, namely ADES 810 and ADES 815, which are currently operating in 🇪🇬. ADES Holding expects that work with Sonatrach will begin during the second half of 2024.

The Tala Hamza mine puts 🇩🇿 on the verge of a new phase of economic growth. The mine contains the largest global reserves of and , as its area is estimated at 23.4 hectares, with exploitable amounting to 34 million tons.

The Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, is supervising the laying of the foundation stone for the project, accompanied by an important delegation of leaders from the sector, as the project is considered one of the structural projects in the field of mines, given the size of its reserves, to cover the national needs of zinc and lead, and to aim to export a share of the production to foreign markets.

REPSOL and Wintershall Dea have closed a deal with Edison Energia SpA to increase respective interests in the Reggane Nord project onshore 🇩🇿. Following regulatory approvals, Repsol increased its interest by 6.75% and Wintershall has increased its share by 4.5%.

In 2023, will be drilling a total of 17 , with 12 in mature basins and 5 in emerging and border basins. This distribution represents 28% and 18% of the annual drilling program, respectively.

In terms of electricity and natural gas distribution by pipeline, efforts have been made to strengthen the means of production, the development of the electricity transmission and distribution network and the electrification and connection of the country with natural gas, while paying particular attention to activities that create wealth and jobs.
