RPP czeka, a inflacja harcuje.

The UK recession will be almost as deep as that of Russia, economists predict

LONDON — The U.K. economic contraction of 2023 will be almost as deep as that of Russia, economists expect, as a sharp fall in household living standards weighs on activity.

In its 2023 macro outlook, Goldman Sachs
forecast a 1.2% contraction in the U.K. real GDP over the course of this year, well below all other G-10 (Group of Ten) major economies. This is set to be followed by a 0.9% expansion in 2024, the lender anticipates.

The figure places Britain only fractionally ahead of Russia, which the bank projects will see a 1.3% contraction in 2023 as it continues to wage war in Ukraine and weather punitive economic sanctions from Western powers. This will be followed by a 1.8% expansion in 2024, Goldman figures suggest.

The Wall Street giant forecasts U.S. expansions of 1% in 2023 and 1.6% in 2024. Germany — the next worst performer among major economies after Russia and the U.K. — is expected to see a 0.6% contraction this year, then expand by 1.4% next year.

Goldman’s projections for the U.K. are below what it cites as a market consensus that sketches a 0.5% contraction in 2023 and a 1.1% expansion in 2024. However, the OECD has also forecast that the U.K. will lag significantly behind other developed nations in the coming years despite facing the same macroeconomic headwinds, putting London closer in performance to Russia than to the rest of the G-7.

The euro area and the U.K. are both already in recession, Goldman Chief Economist Jan Hatzius and his team concluded, since both have endured a “much bigger and more drawn-out increase in household energy bills” that will drive inflation to higher peaks than seen elsewhere.

China's economy looks different than it was going into the pandemic

BEIJING — The Chinese economy of 2023 almost definitely won’t look like the Chinese economy of 2019.

Real estate has slumped under Beijing’s crackdown. Exports have tapered off following a surge. Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com
this year replaced Huawei, hit by U.S. restrictions, as the largest non-state-owned enterprise in China by revenue.

In the last month, Beijing suddenly ceased many of the lockdown measures and Covid testing requirements that had weighed on economic growth over the last 18 months. Analysts warn of a bumpy road to full reopening, but they now expect China’s economy to bounce back sooner than previously forecast.

The elements underpinning that growth will almost certainly look different than they did three years ago, according to economists.

China’s growth model is moving from one highly dependent on real estate and infrastructure to one in which the so-called digital and green economy play greater roles, analysts at leading Chinese investment bank CICC said in their 2023 outlook released last month. They cited the ruling Chinese Communist Party’s 20th National Congress emphasis on innovation.

The digital economy category includes communication equipment, information transmission and software. Green economy refers to industries that need to invest in order to reduce their carbon emissions — electric power, steel and chemicals, among others.

Investments are set to flow back into China as tech giants avoid U.S. delisting, government pledges policy support, says investment manager

Investors could regain the confidence to put their money in Chinese tech stocks as these companies avoid delisting from U.S. stock exchanges and the Chinese government pledges policy support, according to one investment manager.

Last week, U.S. accounting watchdog the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board said it gained full access to inspect and investigate Chinese companies for the first time, after China finally granted the U.S. access in August.

More than 100 Chinese tech companies such as Alibaba
, Baidu
and JD.com
had faced the risk of delisting in the U.S. in 2024 if their audit information was not made available to PCAOB inspectors.

Investors often grapple with a lack of transparency into Chinese stocks.

“It will allow institutional investors to come back. Professional investors were very scared about this delisting risk which was why they have stayed on the sidelines,” Brendan Ahern, chief investment officer at U.S.-based investment manager KraneShares, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia” on Wednesday.

As of Sept. 30, there were 262 Chinese companies listed on U.S. exchanges with a total market capitalization of $775 billion, according to the United States-China Economic and Security Review Commission.

“With that risk going away based on the PCAOB announcement, you are going to see investment dollars flow back into these names,” said Ahern.

“These internet giants are really where investors want to invest when it comes to China,” said Ahern.

But he also caveated that it is still “early days, weeks, months to see that capital return back into the space.”

PERSONAL FINANCE
21% of investors don’t think they pay investing-related fees. Here’s why they’re wrong — and how it costs them

More than a fifth of investors don’t think they pay any fees for their investment accounts, an industry survey has found. Most of them, however, are likely wrong — and that knowledge gap could cost them big money in the long term.

To that point, 21% of people said they don’t pay fees to invest in non-retirement accounts, according to the Investors in the United States: The Changing Landscape survey conducted by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority Investor Education Foundation.

That share is up from 14% in 2018, the last time FINRA, a self-regulatory organization that regulates member brokerage firms and exchange markets, conducted its national investor poll.

An additional 17% of investors in the recent poll said they didn’t know how much they paid in fees.

However, the broad ecosystem of financial services companies doesn’t work for free. These firms — whether an investment fund or financial advisor, for example — generally levy investment fees of some kind.

Those fees may largely be invisible to the average person. Firms disclose their fees in fine print, but generally don’t ask customers to write a check or debit money from their checking accounts each month like non-financial firms might do for a subscription or utility payment.

Instead, they withdraw money behind the scenes from a customer’s investment assets — charges that can easily go unnoticed.

“It’s relatively frictionless,” said Christine Benz, director of personal finance at Morningstar. “We’re not conducting a transaction to pay for those services.”

“And that makes you much less sensitive to the fees you’re paying — in amount and whether you’re paying fees at all.”

Binance’s native BNB token plunges to lowest since July as concerns mount about withdrawals, FTX ties

Over a month after the collapse of FTX, investor concern over crypto exchange Binance isn’t fading.

Binance’s native token, BNB, has fallen 15% in the past week, including a drop of over 6% in the past 24 hours. BNB, first minted in 2017, is the world’s fifth most valuable cryptocurrency, with a market cap of about $39 billion, according to CoinMarketCap. It’s behind only bitcoin
, ethereum
, tether and USD Coin.

The latest issue looming over Binance is FTX’s bankruptcy proceedings. Binance was the first outside investor in FTX. In exiting its equity position in the company last year, Binance received payment equal to roughly $2.1 billion.

In an interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Thursday, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao dismissed concerns that his company could have that money clawed back as FTX winds its way through bankruptcy court and trustees look to retrieve any fraudulent conveyances made by FTX to outside businesses or investors.

“We are financially OK,” Zhao said, after he was asked by CNBC’s Becky Quick if the company could handle a $2.1 billion demand.

Crypto investors have become skeptical of comments from top executives about the financial health of their companies. FTX founder and ex-CEO Sam Bankman-Fried said on Twitter that his company’s assets were fine, even as executives knew it was in the midst of a liquidity crunch that eventually forced the exchange into bankruptcy. Bankman-Fried was arrested this week in the Bahamas and charged by U.S. prosecutors with fraud and money laundering.

Withdrawal demands are another area of concern. Zhao said that around $1.14 billion of net withdrawals took place on Tuesday, but tweeted that this was “not the highest withdrawals we processed, not even top [five].” On Wednesday, he said the situation had “stabilized.” Blockchain analytics firm Nansen said the withdrawal number on Tuesday reached as high as $3 billion.

Former FTX spokesman Kevin O’Leary defends endorsement of Bankman-Fried’s crypto firm

″Shark Tank” star Kevin O’Leary defended his position as a spokesperson for bankrupt crypto firm FTX on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” Friday morning.

CNBC anchors Andrew Ross Sorkin, Joe Kernen and Becky Quick questioned O’Leary on his paid FTX ambassadorship, venture capital career, and his defense of Bankman-Fried days before his arrest.

“This is America. The justice system provides the presumption of innocence unless proven otherwise,” O’Leary responded when asked why he didn’t more stridently condemn Bankman-Fried. The former FTX CEO was arrested by Bahamian authorities earlier this week, pending extradition and trial to face charges in U.S. federal court.

“Kevin, you are an actor in this drama, and you had a front-row seat to Bankman-Fried up until the very end,” Sorkin said. “What do you think happened? Do you think this was a fraud?”

“I don’t have the facts. [New FTX CEO] John Ray doesn’t have them yet. He’s going to get them,” O’Leary responded. “I’m looking through my records. I’m willing to fund a forensic account of our accounts.”

“There are a lot of bad things that have been alleged here, and a lot of them are going to be true, likely,” he added.

But at the same time, O’Leary said he wasn’t inclined to indulge outraged investors on Twitter.

“I understand that the herd is angry,” the businessman, who is also a CNBC contributor, said.

Kernen pressed O’Leary on his rapid about-face on Bitcoin.

“Did that conversion coincide with the $15 million you got from FTX?” Kernen asked. “No,” O’Leary said, stating that his Bitcoin investing began years prior to his FTX ambassadorship in FTX in 2018.

But Sorkin pointed to a 2019 television appearance and noted that O’Leary called Bitcoin “garbage.”

“Then I’m wrong about that,” O’Leary said. “The point is, it was long before I became a paid spokesperson. Long before.”

Sorkin also observed that, as opposed to Tom Brady or Larry David, investors might expect that O’Leary knew better than most how to understand if FTX was problematic or not.

“Companies advertise, and they do it this way,” O’Leary said.

Swiss central bank hikes interest rates by 50 basis points to counter ‘further spread of inflation’

The Swiss National Bank increased its benchmark interest rate Thursday for the third time this year, taking it to 1%.

The central bank said it was looking to counter “increased inflationary pressure and a further spread of inflation” with the move.

Inflation in the country remains well above the Swiss National Bank’s target of 0-2%, but is noticeably below the soaring rates of neighboring European countries. Switzerland’s inflation rate remained steady at 3% last month, having dropped from a three-decade high of 3.5% in August.

The central bank’s 50 basis point hike Thursday came after it unexpectedly raised its policy interest rate for the first time in 15 years in June, taking it from -0.75% to -0.25%. It then entered positive territory with a 75 basis point increase on Sep. 22.

And there could be further hikes on the horizon.

“It cannot be ruled out that additional rises in the SNB policy rate will be necessary to ensure price stability over the medium term,” a press release from the central bank said.

“To provide appropriate monetary conditions, the SNB is also willing to be active in the foreign exchange market as necessary,” it added.

Global slowdown
In announcing its latest rate hike, the Swiss National Bank noted the global slowdown in growth and that inflation is “markedly above” central banks’ targets in many countries — and it doesn’t expect this to change any time soon.

“The SNB expects this challenging situation to persist for now. Global economic growth is likely to be weak in the coming quarters, and inflation will remain elevated for the time being,” the press release said.

In the medium term, however, the bank expects inflation to settle at more moderate levels as countries continue to tighten monetary policy.

Charlotte de Montpellier, senior economist at ING, noted that the Swiss National Bank’s total increase of 175 basis points in 2022 compares to an expected 250 basis-point increase in the eurozone and a 425 basis-point hike in the U.S.

MERGERS
Recession fears could trigger a ‘lipstick’ effect on deal activity next year

The volume and size of mergers and acquisitions saw a significant decrease this year as macro headwinds weighed down the global market.

For the first time in over three years, there were no mega deals valued over $10 billion during the third quarter, according to the latest M&A report by Willis Towers Watson There were only 49 large deals valued over $1 billion during the quarter, as compared with 67 large deals closed in the same period a year ago.

Despite global recession fears, geopolitical tensions and expectations for inflation and interest rates to keep rising in 2023, WTW predicts dealmaking activity will continue.

“An unprecedented number of disruptive forces have created headwinds for dealmakers, but they are also generating opportunities,” said Massimo Borghello, head of human capital M&A consulting, Asia Pacific at WTW.

“The fundamentals that drive dealmaking are still in place and, with valuations moderating after the historic levels reached in 2021, strategic and financial buyers alike will take advantage of better-priced opportunities for growth.”
