The stunning Galápagos Archipelago is part of Ecuador. Did you know that Charles Darwin spent 5 weeks at the Galapagos Islands? During his voyage in 1835 he observed the flora and fauna and noticed differences in local birds’ beaks depending on their environment and the food that they consumed. Darwin used these findings as a basis for his theory of evolution he presented in “On the Origin of the Species”(1859).

Today, 26/07/22 is the international day for the conservation of the mangroves ecosystem!

Here’s 4 reasons why you should care about them:

1. Mangroves are globally rare. They represent less than 1% of tropical forests and less than 0,4% of the global forest-estate.

2. Good for the climate: Mangroves can store up to 10 times more carbon than terrestrial forest! But when destroyed they become a source of CO2 :(

3. Mangroves serve as a buffer between shorelines and coastal cities - they protect against rising sea levels, storms, hurricanes and can even a tsunami wave.

4. Mangroves are hotspots of biodiversity. Many endangered species find their home in this wet forest. On .santay for example you can see lots of tropical birds, little crabs and even crocodiles!
