65 visits you have to do when you come to Ecuador (10/65)
10. El Panecillo
El Panecillo is a natural elevation of 3,000 meters above sea level, it was baptized with this name because of its resemblance to a small bread; it´s located in the very heart of the city of Quito. It is one of the most visited places in the city. Due to its location, it has become the most important natural viewpoint of the city.
The place received its name from the Spanish conquerors, because before it was called by the aborigines as "Shungoloma" which in Quichua means "hill of the heart". In pre-Inca times, on this site there was a temple of worship to the sun, called "Yavirac", which was destroyed by Rumiñahui while he resisted the Spanish advance with his troops.
The Majestic Virgin of Quito, is composed of 7400 pieces, each one piece numbered, for which it could be put together like a puzzle.
The monument was inaugurated on March 28, 1975 with a mass attended by 1,500 people who went up on pilgrimage from the Basilica of the National Vow (it was a pre-inauguration, as the wings has to be assembled). In the month of September 1975, the wings were just placed.
One of the attractions of Panecillo is the viewpoint, where you can see the immense contrast between the old city and the modern city. The only thing that has not changed with the passing of time is the sky, which will always be a transparent blue, that is, a Quito blue. However, the Panecillo at night will provide you with a fascinating show, being able to admire the city of Quito and the illuminated Virgen of Panecillo.

65 visits you have to do when you come to Ecuador (9/65)
9. La Ronda Street
It is one of the most traditional streets found in Quito. It´s believed that the original name was "El Chaquiñán", a term that is now translated as a road or path. It´s presumed that this small street was already established and traced around 1480, when the Incas first arrived in Quito. Upon the arrival of the Spaniards it was renamed Ullaguangayacu or " buzzard ravine ", and already in the colony it adopts the name by which it is known until today, alluding to the Spanish night rounds. Historically the conformation of this neighborhood is located between the 18th and 19th centuries. Its remodeling began in 2006.
Cradle of painters, writers and poets of the 30s; It was in the houses on this narrow street that songs and corridors were written, which were home to politicians, romantics and bohemians.
Its main artery is Juan de Dios Morales street, with constructions that are modest with balconies, with interior patios, terraces, with corridors and rooms that look towards a generally paved central patio, hallways, many of them with hinged doors, House walls are smooth with few openings. At night, the street lights up and there is an air of party, but traditional. The bars and restaurants offer live music, as well as delicious food and typical drinks, it´s a place that tourists and locals love to go to at night, where you can have a deeper understanding of the local culture and a good place to make local and foreign friends.

7. Museum of Pre-Columbian art- Alabado House
The Museum’s collection comprises about 5,000 pieces and artifacts with ceremonial or utilitarian purposes created in ceramic, stone, shell, metal, textile, and wood. Each one of these objects draws us closer to the spiritual, social, and political practices of cultural groups who lived in the various regions that are Ecuador today, from the Pacific coast to the Andean mountains and into the tropical forests.
The greater part of the collection is conformed by ceramic pieces whose principal use was in ritual and ceremonial practices. The coastal cultures—Valdivia, Chorrera, and Jama-Coaque—are the most represented, but adding to these are significant pieces from twenty other cultures who populated ancient Ecuador before the arrival of the Incan Empire between 1440 and 1530 AD. Although the objects’ uses are diverse, the collection includes an exceptional number of sonorous pieces, such as whistles, statuettes, and bottles, in addition to an outstanding collection of metal-working instruments—chisels, tongs, and polishing tools.
Unlike other archaeological museums, the Alabado is organized thematically and not chronologically or geographically: The world of the ancestors, The primordial world, The world of materials, The parallel worlds, Axis of the world, Spiritual world of the shaman, World of elites, Amulets and the World of art. The museum has 14 permanent exhibition rooms, 1 room for temporary exhibitions, 2 rooms for the development of educational activities, 1 café and 2 patios. It also has a service and customer service area.

6. Independence Plaza
The Independence Plaza, better known as the Plaza Grande, in the 17th century, in 1612, the powers of the city moved to the surroundings of the Plaza Grande. In this square there was a water fountain that helped supply the vital liquid to the people who lived in the area and its surroundings. In addition, the square also served as a market. It was in the 18th century that the Plaza Grande took on the form and importance of a main square, and began to serve as a garden for the Carondelet Palace. In the late 19th century and until the mid-20th century, the Plaza Grande was converted into a French-style garden, and in 1903, President Eloy Alfaro ordered the construction of a monument to commemorate the centenary of the first cry for independence of the country, which replaced a monument to Isabel the Catholic.
The Independence Plaza, is the heart of Quito’s historical center, and a historical space where a series of events of vital political importance in Ecuador have taken place. To this day, it is a social meeting place for the people who live in the city. The square is surrounded by four large buildings: the Presidential Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Quito and the Municipal Palace. All these facts make it an obligatory place to visit once you arrive at Ecuador’s capital.

5. Basilica of the National Vow
Basilica of the National Vow is a neo-Gothic religious building in the historic center of Quito. Due to its size and style, it is considered the largest neo-Gothic temple in America.
The Basilica of the National Vow is the most important work of Ecuadorian neo-Gothic architecture and one of the most representative of the American continent, being at the same time the largest in the lands of the new world. Due to its structure and style, it’s compared to two of the great cathedrals in the world: St. Patrick's Cathedral (New York) and Notre Dame Cathedral (Paris).
An important feature of its façade are the gargoyles, which are the main hallmarks of the Basilica, as they maintain a direct relationship with the time in which they were conceived. They are found on the upper sides of the central nave, forming an unprecedented contribution to the neo-Gothic style by Ecuador, since the animals that decorate this temple are not only mythological (like those of European temples), but they are endemic animals and exotic, representative of the Ecuadorian fauna such as alligators, Galapagos tortoises, blue-footed bo***es, armadillos, howler monkeys, pumas, among others.
During your visit, you will go up by elevator to the first level, from where you have a viewpoint that offers you the first panoramic views of Quito, with the two towers of the Basilica in the foreground, then you can go up a tower, but not the mentioned from the main facade, it is worth mentioning that the ascent is not suitable for people suffering from vertigo.

The Quito Cathedral or Iglesia Museo Catedral Primada de Quito is one of the architectural jewels of the Ecuadorian capital and is a very popular site for national and foreign tourists.
Located next to the Plaza Grande, the construction of this building began between 1562 and 1567, and culminated in 1806 under the orders of Baron Héctor de Carondelet, president of the Royal Audience of Quito at that time.
The temple was built with adobe and carved wood, but in 1562 it was demolished to replace the foundations with stone, it is one of the oldest temples in South America and the pride of the Historic Center of Quito. Its construction has styles such as Baroque, Mudejar, Rococo, Neo-Gothic and Neoclassical. The Cathedral has survived two earthquakes that shook Quito between October 1660 and February 1797.
The majestic building houses paintings and cultures with important figures from the colonial and republican times, mainly the canvas of the death of the Virgin, by Miguel de Santiago.

Inca Trail- Important World Heritage of Ecuador (Qhapaq Ñan) (6/6)
It’s a masterful network of road interconnection that extended to six countries in South America from Argentina to Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia; it was on June 21, 2014 declared as Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco, a distinction that recognizes the ingenuity of a pre-Hispanic system that surprised the world.
The roads identified to date are more than 60,000 km that makes up this huge network. But studies carried out reveal that the Qhapaq Ñan would be made up of more than double what was identified and verified, throughout the Andean territory.
This extraordinary road system extends through one of the world's most contrasting geographical areas, from the snow-capped peaks of the Andes that rise at more than 6,000 meters of altitude to the Pacific coast, passing through humid tropical forests, fertile valleys and deserts of absolute aridity. The road network reached its maximum expansion in the 15th century, reaching the length and breadth of the Andean mountain range.
The route of the roads, in addition to connecting one town with another, served to connect ideas; as a trade route and was also strategic routes of connection with the mountains.
In Ecuador, 108 km of this ancient road are recognized, which include 49 archaeological sites linked to 31 communities.
This route designed and built during the Inca Empire of Tahuantinsuyo and that connected the entire Empire, crosses Ecuador from Rumichaca, province of Carchi, in the north, to Espíndola, province of Loja, in the south. It is divided into 22 sections or sub-sections and additionally there are cross roads that connect the Andes with the Amazon and the Ecuadorian coast.

Traditional weaving of the toquilla straw hat (Panama Huts)-Important World Heritage of Ecuador (5/6)
The "Traditional Weaving of the Ecuadorian Toquilla Straw Hat" was declared as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO on December 5, 2012. The toquilla straw hat is woven with the fibers of a peculiar palm tree that grows in the coasts of Ecuador.
The toquilla straw hat is woven with the fibers of a peculiar palm tree that grows on the coasts of Ecuador. The coastal farmers cultivate the toquilla plant and collect the stems in order to separate the fiber from the green bark, boiling the latter to remove the chlorophyll and then drying it with charcoal and sulfur to bleach it. The weavers prepare the pattern, the crown and the brim of the hat with this raw material. The weaving of a hat can last from one day to eight months, depending on its quality and fineness.
In the coastal community of Pile, weavers make extra-fine hats that require specific climatic conditions and an exact number of points in each row of weaving. The confection is finalized with a series of washing, bleaching, baking, ironing and pressing operations.
The weavers are mostly peasant families and weaving techniques are passed on to children at home, through observation and imitation, from a very early age.
The techniques and knowledge encompass a complex and dynamic social fabric that includes, among other elements, traditional cultivation and production techniques, various forms of social organization and the use of the hat as part of daily and festive clothing.

Cuenca Historic Center- Important World Heritage of Ecuador (4/6)
Cuenca is the third most important city in Ecuador, it’s located in the south of the country nestled in the Andes mountain range, it was declared as Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco on December 1, 1999.
The historic center of Cuenca is full of colonial elements such as carved wooden and wrought iron balconies, paving stones and architecture that recalls the European but without neglecting indigenous details.
A separate chapter deserves the numerous churches of Cuenca, a symbol of the Spanish religiosity that settled in those distant lands. Its architecture is imposing with valuable details in marble and gold.
In the absence of one, it has two cathedrals in a scarce territory: the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, or new cathedral, and the Sagrario Church, or old cathedral. In turn, the two oldest religious temples are the Monastery of the Conceptas and the Asunción that date from the first decades of the founding of the city in 1557.
