Our symbolic bird is among the three largest birds of prey in the world, but what few people know is that it has a characteristic that makes it even more incredible.

The harpy eagle impresses with the complexity of its vision, which is extremely adapted for hunting in dense forests. With well-developed binocular vision, it can assess distances with great precision, a skill of utmost importance for capturing prey in an environment where visibility is limited due to the vegetation. It can detect minimal movements, making it easier to locate prey that move discreetly among the foliage.

This combined ability of precise binocular vision and subtle movement detection significantly contributes to the harpy eagle's effectiveness as a predator highly adapted to dense forest environments.

Take advantage of our Harpy Eagle Tour to discover the incredible biodiversity present at our observation tower location, such as the magnificent Scaled Pigeon.

This species lives up to the meaning of its scientific name, which means "splendid noisy pigeon."

One striking feature is its metallic-colored feathers, which are even more prominent in males, giving the appearance of scales.

Commonly found in the canopies of dense forests, tall thickets, and gallery forests, the trogon pigeon can be observed alone or in pairs, usually foraging on the ground or perched.

Our flagship species, the harpy eagle, is primarily known for its incredible hunting ability, which begins to develop during the post-fledging period.

Quietly soaring through the vast Amazon rainforest, the harpy eagle employs, in addition to its sharp talons mentioned earlier in another publication, extremely sharp vision, enabling it to identify its prey from long distances and ensuring a successful capture.

The versatility of its diet is also a great asset. This dietary flexibility and incredible cunning during hunts solidify its place at the top of the food chain in these immense tropical forests.

Today is National Birdwatching Day in Brazil!

In Brazil, Birdwatcher's Day is celebrated on April 28th. The date refers to the first record of birdwatching in Brazil when "Pero Vaz de Caminha documented the first bird observations made in Brazilian territory in 1500, as recorded in his famous letter to the king of Portugal, where he reports, among other things, on the richness of our wild bird".

In the letter he says:

"While we were in this forest cutting wood, some parrots were crossing these trees; some green, others brown, large, beautiful, big and small red parrots, in such a way that it seems to me that there will be many in this land. However, those I saw would not be more than nine or ten, at most. We did not see any other birds at that time, except for some wood pigeons, and they seemed to me to be considerably larger than those in Portugal. Several said they saw turtledoves, but I did not see them. However, given the many and large trees, and the infinite species, I have no doubt that there are many birds in this wilderness."

We wish you a Happy Birdwatcher's Day!

🦛 Today, April 27th, we celebrate International Tapir Day!

Join us on our tours, where tapir watching is one of the highlights!

Tapirs, often referred to as "gardeners of the forest," play a crucial role in maintaining the biodiversity of their habitats. These gentle giants are important seed dispersers, helping to regenerate forests and sustain the rich ecosystems they call home.

Unfortunately, tapirs are facing threats such as habitat loss and hunting. Conservation efforts are crucial to ensuring the survival of these remarkable animals and the ecosystems they support.

Let's raise awareness about the importance of protecting tapirs and their habitats.

Happy International Tapir Day! 🌿🦛

The claws of the Harpy Eagle are perfectly adapted to the demands of its predatory lifestyle. These claws, besides being a symbol of power and dexterity, are essential tools for the survival of the strongest bird of prey in tropical forests.

Each one can reach up to 13 centimeters in length, with a curvature that allows the harpy to exert incredible force when capturing and holding its prey, which can include medium-sized mammals such as monkeys and sloths, for example.

In addition to extraordinary strength, they also have a special keratin coating that keeps them sharp and resistant to wear during frequent use. Thanks to these powerful and sharp claws, the Harpia harpyja is capable of hunting with efficiency and precision.

The Yellow-faced Parakeet is a charming bird that we may encounter during our visit to the observation tower.

With its vibrant green plumage and a yellow band on the upper coverts of the secondary remiges of each wing, it is easily recognized and appreciated by birdwatchers and nature lovers.

These parakeets are known for their sociable nature, often forming noisy flocks as they fly in search of food, which includes fruits and seeds. Their cheerful vocalization adds a lively atmosphere to the forests and urban areas where they inhabit.

Brazil hosts the greatest diversity of primates in the world, and we are fortunate that our observation tower is located in an incredible and privileged region, between the Juruena and Teles Pires Rivers.

This location provides encounters with a surreal biodiversity, including a newly discovered species that only occurs in this interfluvial region, the Schneider's saddleback tamarin, endemic to Mato Grosso, which can be observed in upland forests and in the transitional areas between cerrado and the Amazon that occur in the region.

It is a small-sized primate, measuring up to 50cm, with silver fur with dark and orange tones in some parts, very attractive and clever like others in the family.

The Black-fronted Nunbird is a fairly common Bucconidae along the edges of tall forests, easily spotted due to their high activity levels and constant perch-changing. They're certainly sighted during visits to the Harpy Eagle's nest.

Being the largest of the family, its entire body is covered in a dark gray that makes its ember-colored beak even more attention-grabbing.

Capturing insects mid-flight is one of its specialties, but an interesting curiosity is that the Black-fronted Nunbird is one of the army ant followers that love to feast on insects left by them.

Aside from its beauty, its song is also a great highlight for our birding trip!

During the tour, you may encounter the White-throated Toucan, an intriguing Amazonian bird classified as vulnerable by the IUCN Red List.

Quite striking, measuring up to 50cm in length, it features a white throat with a faint reddish line, along with a colorful, large beak used for feeding on fruits, insects, and even eggs and nestlings of other birds. Found in tree canopies, forest edges, and clearings, its call is one of the most commonly heard in the Amazon rainforest. As you observe the Harpy Eagle nest, you're likely to delight in hearing the distinctive vocalization of this beautiful toucan and catching sight of it.

The Queen Harpy Eagle

Considered the strongest bird on the planet and the largest bird of prey in Brazil, the Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpya) not only has a highly powerful hooked beak but also possesses one of the largest claws in the birds, comparable to those of the American brown bear, and its legs resemble the fists of an adult man. The erectile crest with varying sizes of feathers on the occipital portion of the head is one of its most striking characteristics, making it even more imposing
In Brazil, the species is endangered, and several factors contribute to this, with human actions being strongly linked to the threat. The Harpy Eagle has a very slow population growth, and the advance of deforestation and hunting is a concern for researchers studying the species.

The Blue-and-Yellow Macaw is a boldly colored resident of the Neotropics.

Locally common in many parts of its range, but scarce or extirpated from others due to large-scale trapping for the pet trade. Blue-and-yellow macaw can be found in areas of the Amazon basin where large Mauritia palm stands grow.

The Harpy Eagle is a Neotropical rainforest species. It lives at low elevations where it can find prey and large trees for nests. Its rainforest home is lush and vibrant and contains some of the highest biodiversity in the world. The Harpy Eagle lives among jaguars, macaws, tapirs, monkeys, sloths, snakes, frogs, and many other plants and animals – each one playing an important role in its environment. These eagles prefer large expanses of pristine forest.

The Harpy Eagle's habitat is indeed a marvel of biodiversity. Our mission to help people understand and protect these areas in the Amazon Rainforest is crucial for preserving such ecosystems.
