One of the most popular spots in Cuenca is the New Cathedral of Cuenca, often known as "The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception." In the Parque Calderon, the New Cathedral of Cuenca is situated in front of the Central Plaza. This cathedral is viewed as a representation of the city's religious architecture. All sides of Cuenca can see the edifice because of its imposing size.
Brother Juan Buatista Stiehle, a German Redemptorist monk, created it between 1885 and 1899, when he passed away. A cathedral "as large as the faith" of the Cuencans was what the bishop Miguel Leon envisioned. 9,000 of Cuenca's 10,000 residents could fit inside the Cathedral when it was first built. Building the cathedral took close to a century.
