The Tamme--Lauri oak is Estonia's largest and probably most famous oak tree. It has a circumference of 130 cm, a height of 8 m and with its 800 years is a real grandpa among the trees. And as grandpas often need some aid to stay upright, the tree-trunk has been filled with reinforced concrete to keep it from falling.

Happy Re-independence day Estonia!
Download SnippetGuide and listen to the story:

21. of August 1991. Sunrise - ground still humid from the morning dew - Soviet military forces arrived at Tallinn TV tower, with a direct order to capture the tower and stop all communication to the outer world. The command came from Moscow, where Gorbatchev’s Government was shortly overthrown. In the end the Coup wasn’t successful and those were very confusing times for the Soviet Government.

Using the situation, Estonia had declared independence from the Soviet Union just a few hours ago – on August the 20th at 23:02. Sending the military troops was Moscow’s answer. The television tower was protected by just a few men – successfully! An ingenious idea of blocking the elevator-doors with a match-box made the soldiers climb the stairs. When they finally got up, the men threatened to release the so-called fire-protection gas – basically suffocating everyone inside the tower. The aim was to buy some extra time and to keep in contact with the world. In the end television contact was broken, but radio stayed.

The situation in Moscow changed again and even before the sunset, the troops were called back, waving politely to the locals as they left.

Relieved by the outcome, Estonia was once again an independent country. And it was all achieved with no casualties.

- Origin of Narva Castle -
One of the legends says “...Once upon a time, the fearless robbers used to live at that place. They were free people and earned living by taking duties from the merchant-ships passing by. Some of them were also pirates and robbed the merchants on the sea. They hid their treasure in the cliff. So the robbers happily lived until the Germans came from the West, defeated the robbers and built their castle on this land”.

Bikernieki Memorial in Latvia
"1941 - German forces occupied Riga. Some Jews were lucky and moved quickly - they fled eastwards, but many others, who thought a refuge in Riga would be a good idea, were now trapped there. Already on the first day of the N**i occupation, Latvian collaborators began arresting thousands of Jewish men and imprisoning them. What followed can be included in the list of the worst crimes of holocaust during WW II."

Happy Easter!
A beautiful golden egg! Crafted out of solid gold, the egg opens, revealing an opaque white “shell”, which in return opens and reveals a shiny, golden egg yolk. But the dazzling doesn’t stop there. Also the golden yolk opens and reveals a tiny, brilliantly colored hen. The hen in return contains a miniscule diamond replica of the Czarist Imperial crown, from which hangs a shiny ruby pedant.

Check out the Snippet that made it a hundred:
Father and Son sculpture in Tartu,

This, rather interesting-looking sculpture, is an artwork by an Estonian sculptor Ülo Õun and was modeled in 1977. It symbolizes the relations between generations in the family. Generation to generation - the children are often bigger, better and smarter than their parents. It is a welcome development - we want our children to achieve and learn more than we ever could.

The adult version of the man is actually the artist Ülo Õun himself. The toddler is his one year old son. Hand in hand, they walk the streets of Tartu since 2004.

Pisa and its famous tower is known to everybody. But Tartu has its own “Leaning Tower”. Built in the end of the 18th century, the house, just as the tower in Pisa, was constructed somewhat sloppily. The builders set one part of the foundation on the old city wall and the other on a wooden construction. After a while the house started leaning as the wooden part of the foundation gave away under pressure of the house and the years of wear and tear. It was in danger of falling, but during the Soviet Rule, Polish engineers luckily managed to stabilize it and now it is a rather cool sight to see!

The house is also called the Barclay House as Princess Barclay bought the building in 1819 after the death of her husband Barclay de Tolly. He was a Field Marshal in the Imperial Russian army, had Scottish Barclay Clan roots, was born in the Baltics, spoke German, was tutored in St. Petersburg and fought against the Napoleon army.

There you go – A small house with almost a global touch to it!
