Our Story
Philae Island was located on the River Nile south of Aswan The island was submerged after building the Aswan High Dam, but Philae temple was rescued and relocated on a new island called Egilica or Agilika, and it was reshaped to imitate Philae Island. Philae Temple is a complex of temples, the main temple was dedicated to goddess Isis, the complex is a blend between the ancient Egyptian’s and the Greco Roman’s architecture. The temple of Isis is still preserved though some decorations were removed due to being under water for quite some time. The temple includes; the main pylon with two towers decorated with scenes of Ptolemy XI, the main court yard leads to a 2nd pylon which leads to a hypostyle hall supported by pillars and then vestibules leading to the sanctuary. The oldest remains in Philae, date back to King Taharqa of the 25th dynasty who built the first chapel for the goddess Isis, and Ptolemaic kings added parts to the temple during their reign. There were other monuments on Philae island such as: The Kiosk of Trajan, which is located on the right side of Philae temple; decorated with scenes of the Roman emperor Trajan making offerings to the Gods, also there was The Temple of Horus, The Temple of Hathor, The Gateway of Tiberius, The Gateway of Diocletian, and The Temple of Augustus.
