Anubis, god of the dead, known as Lord of the necropolis, Lord of the caves, Lord of embalmers, Lord of Nubia, He who counts hearts or He who is on the mountain.

It is one of the oldest gods of Egyptian mythology considered the god of the dead and god of the Duat until the arrival of Osiris. He was relegated to the background and Horus became the watchman of the deceased during the Trials of Osiris, in charge of the balance where the hearts were weighed to determine their final destination. His other duty was to guide the dead on his way to the Hereafter.

It appears mentioned in the Book of the Dead, as protector of the mummies and guardian of the cemeteries along with seven other spirits Amset, Hapy, Duamutef, Kebehsenuf, Maa-an-tef, Jerybakef and Mejenti-irti. He also appears in the Book of Caverns as embalmer and preparer of the mummies for his journey in the other world by what is known as Lord of embalmers.

According to the sources he is considered as the son of Osiris and Nephthys, or as the illegitimate son of Seth, begotten by Nephthys, or even as the fourth son of Ra and Nephthys. On the part of mother is associated as possible son of the cow Hesat or the goddess Bastet.

He is represented as a dog or as a human with a black jackal's head, symbol of fertility, holding an Ankh
