Abu Simbel is a famous archaeological site in southern Egypt, known for its two massive rock-cut temples built by Pharaoh Ramses II in the 13th century BCE. The temples were constructed to honor the gods and to celebrate Ramses II’s victory at the Battle of Kadesh. The larger temple is dedicated to Ramses himself, with colossal statues of the pharaoh adorning the entrance, while the smaller temple honors his wife, Queen Nefertari.
In the 1960s, the entire site was relocated to higher ground to prevent flooding caused by the construction of the Aswan High Dam. This monumental relocation project was conducted by UNESCO and remains one of the greatest engineering feats of the 20th century.💥
