In brief, Egyptology is the scientific study of ancient Egypt's history and culture, from the earliest times to the Arab conquest, a time span of some 4,600 years. Thanks to the birth of Egyptology, these historic etchings - found on an obelisk in the Karnak temple in Luxor - tell the story of a dynasty that would have otherwise been lost.

It all started when Jean-Francois Champollion, a French scholar, was able to unravel the mystery surrounding the Rosetta Stone which was inscribed with the same text in three scripts - Demotic, hieroglyphic and Greek. After centuries of attempts by researchers and scholars, he was able to correctly interpret the ancient Egyptian inscriptions. Today the stone can be found at the British Museum in London although Egypt’s renowned Egyptologist Zahi Hawass has petitioned last month for the return of the artefact which he believes to be “an icon of Egyptian identity”, along with two others iconic pieces of history from the Louvre & the Neuse Museum.
