Some hotels in Alexandria have a remarkable feature: they maintain a royal atmosphere through their decorations, furniture, facilities, and even functional vintage elevators. These preserved elements transport guests back in time, enhancing their overall experience. I sincerely hope that more hotels in Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan adopt this approach. Such establishments add an authentic flavor to the travel experience, especially if they also serve traditional Egyptian cuisine, rather than the typical hotel fare that doesn’t truly reflect Egypt’s rich culinary heritage. 🏰🌟🇪🇬

Jabal Silsila, also known as Gebel el-Silsila, is a remarkable location situated 65 kilometers north of Aswan in Upper Egypt. It lies at the narrowest point along the entire Nile, where the cliffs on both sides create a dramatic landscape. Let me share some intriguing details about this historical site:

Name and Significance:
The ancient Egyptian name for Jabal Silsila was “Kheny” or “Khenu”, which translates to “The Place of Rowing”.
The Arabic name “Jabal al-Silsila” means “Chain of Mountains” or “Series of Mountains”.
The location served as a major sandstone quarry during various periods, from at least the 18th Dynasty to Greco-Roman times.
It played a crucial role in providing building materials for significant temples and monuments.
Sandstone Quarry:
During the 18th Dynasty, the Egyptians shifted from using limestone to sandstone.
Gebel el-Silsila became a source of sandstone, allowing for the construction of larger architraves.
Akhenaten’s sculptor Bek oversaw the opening of a stone quarry here.
Talatat blocks, used in buildings at Luxor and Amarna, were quarried from Silsila.
Shrines, Chapels, and Temples:
The site contains numerous stone quarries on both the west and east sides of the Nile.
Almost all of Ancient Egypt’s great temples, including Karnak, Luxor, Medinet Habu, Kom Ombo, and the Ramesseum, derived their sandstone from Silsila.
The principal deity of Gebel el-Silsila is Sobek, the god of crocodiles and controller of the waters.
Historical Legacy:
Silsila’s New Kingdom stelae and cenotaphs still bear witness to its ancient significance.
The area holds carvings, inscriptions, and shrines erected by officials involved in quarrying.
Over the centuries, it became the largest sandstone quarry in Egypt, contributing to the construction of major temples.
