Predynastic Egypt in the Leipzig Egyptian museum

A painted wooden shabti-box that serves as a special container for the funerary figurines. It imitates a storage building and is divided into three compartments. The deceased man is portrayed standing in adoration before the God Osiris, but he is not named in the inscriptions shown on the box. This artifact dates to circa 1150 BCE during the early 20th Dynasty of the New Kingdom.

The remarkable workmanship of this box that has survived for over 3,000 years is yet another testament to the skill, effort and dedication the Egyptians employed in what they produced of what we would now call arts and crafts.

This piece (INV 960), which is 34 centimeters in height, is now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, Vienna, Austria.
