The two identical statues depict Amenhotep III (14th century BC) seated, hands spread on his knees and looking toward the east (in fact toward the southeast according to modern directions) toward the river. Two short figures are carved on the front of the throne, along with his legs: his wife Tiye and his mother Death M and Ya. While the side panels depict the Nile god Habi, the two statues were made of quartzite sandstone blocks that were quarried from Jabal al-Ahmar (near present-day Cairo) and transported 675 km (420 mi) overland to Thebes (Luxor). It is believed that the stones were too heavy to be transported upstream of the Nile. The blocks that Roman engineers later used to reconstruct the northern statue may have come from Edfu (north of Aswan). Including the stone platforms they were standing on - about 4 meters (13 feet) high - each statue is 18 meters (60 feet) high and each weighs 720 tons. They are about 15 meters (50 feet) apart.

Both statues are so damaged that the features above the waist are virtually unrecognizable. The southern statue is made of a single piece of stone, but the northern statue has a large and wide crack in the lower half and above the waist and has 5 stone layers. These upper levels consist of a different type of sandstone, as a result of a later rebuilding attempt, attributed by William de Wifflesley Abni to Septimius Severus. It is believed that the two statues were originally identical to each other, although engravings and minor arts were different.

The original function of the two statues was to stand as guardians at the entrance to the Amenhotep Memorial Temple (or mortuary temple): a colossal structure built during the age of the pharaoh, where he was worshiped as a god on earth before and after his departure from this world. At that time, the temple complex was considered the largest and most luxurious in ancient Egypt. It covers a total area of ​​35 hectares (86 acres), so that later competitors such as the Ramesseum of Ramses II or Medinet Habu of Ramses III could not match it in the area; Even the temple of Karnak was smaller when it was standing during the time of Amenhotep.
