Philae Temple Complex
A view of the Philae temple complex, partially flooded by the flooding of the Nile prior to the construction of the 1968 Great Dam, Aswan.
The temples have hardly been damaged since ancient times, but with each flood the situation worsened, and in the 1960s the island was flooded up to a third of the buildings all year round.
In 1960, UNESCO launched a project to try to save the buildings on the island from the ravages of the ever-increasing waters of the Nile. The first consideration was the construction of three dams and the creation of a separate lake with a lower water level.
First of all, a large bulkhead was built, built of two rows of steel plates, between which 1 million cubic meters of sand was removed. Any leaked water was pumped out.
The monuments were then cleaned and measured using photogrammetry, a technique that accurately reconstructs the original size of the building blocks that were used by the ancients. Each building was then dismantled approximately 40,000 units, ranging from 2 to 25 tons, and then transported to the nearby island of Agilkiya, located at an elevation of about 500 meters (1600 feet). The transmission itself took place between 1977 and 1980.

Egyptologists list his length of reign as varying between 38 to 40 years. Most experts believe he became pharaoh sometime between the age of six and 12 years of age under the guidance of an unknown co-regent.

Amenhotep was his actual birth name, meaning “Amun I Pleased, Ruler of Thebes”. Although he was often known as “Amenhotep the Magnificent”, his actual thrown name was Nub-maat-re, or “Lord of Truth is Re”.

During the second year of his reign he married Tiye. Although she was not of royal blood, she came from a powerful Egyptian family. Amenhotep took many wives during his reign. His harem included at least six foreign diplomatic arrangements and two of his own daughters.

Egyptologists have identified two sons and four daughters. His first son, the crown prince Thutmose, died at an early age. His second son by Queen Tiye, Amenhotep IV, succeeded him and later changed his name to Akhenaton. His grandson was the famous King Tutankhamun.

The Temple of Isis was originally located upon the island of Philae, which meant "the end" in Ancient Egypt language and marked the southernmost boundary of the historic nation. It was one of the last temples dedicated to the cult of Isis, who was worshipped for bringing her husband Osiris back to life after he was murdered and dismembered by his brother Seth. Iris and Osiris went on to have a son, Horus, who was one of the most important Ancient Egyptian deities, and the goddess therefore earned the title "Mother of God".
