Malý ostrov Philae, dlouhý pouhých 450 metrů a široký necelých 150 metrů, vzbuzoval už od pradávna představivost nesčetných cestovatelů do Egypta. Byl proslulý svou krásou a říkalo se mu "perla Egypta". Rostliny a palmy rostly z úrodných usazenin, které se shromažďovaly v puklinách žulového podloží. Na obzoru se hrdě tyčily půvabné řecko-římské chrámy a kolonády, kiosky a svatyně. Vládl tu pocit tajemna. Ani ne tak skryté, jako spíš zahalené tajemství.

Die winzige Insel Philae, die nur 450 Meter lang und weniger als 150 Meter breit ist, hat schon früh die Fantasie unzähliger Ägyptenreisender angeregt. Sie war für ihre Schönheit berühmt und wurde als "Perle Ägyptens" bezeichnet. Pflanzen und Palmen wuchsen auf den fruchtbaren Ablagerungen, die sich in den Spalten des Granitgesteins angesammelt hatten. Anmutige griechisch-römische Tempel und Kolonnaden, Kioske und Heiligtümer ragten stolz aus der Skyline. Es herrschte ein Hauch von Geheimnis. Nicht heimlich, um Geheimnisse zu verletzen, sondern eher als verschleierte Mystifikation.
