The tradition of Ramadan lanterns known as "fanous" has deep roots in Egypt, dating back centuries. While the exact origins of the lanterns in Egypt are not documented, they are believed to have originated during the Fatimid Caliphate in the 10th century.

Legend has it that the tradition of fanous in Egypt began during the rule of the Fatimid Caliph Al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah. To celebrate the arrival of Ramadan, the Caliph ordered the streets of Cairo to be illuminated with lanterns to signify the beginning of the holy month. This act not only served the practical purpose of providing light for nighttime activities but also symbolized the spiritual enlightenment and joyous atmosphere of Ramadan.

Over time, the tradition of Ramadan lanterns became deeply ingrained in Egyptian culture, evolving from a symbol of practicality to one of tradition, festivity, and spirituality. Families would hang lanterns outside their homes, and children would carry them as they roamed the streets, singing traditional Ramadan songs and spreading joy.
