1. The Pyramids took approximately 20 years to build, using 2.3 million limestone blocks.

2. The Pyramids contain a nearby village of housing and various facilities. These were used by the huge team of skilled engineers, architects and stone masons in charge of building the Pyramids.

3. The Pyramids align almost perfectly to the constellation Orion.

4. Pharaohs were buried with some of their belongings believing they would need in the afterlife like food, jewelery, furniture, and sometimes boats!

5. The shape of the Pyramids was inspired by the shape of the rays of the sun.

Abu Simbel is a historical site of two rock-cut temples located in Upper Egypt, Aswan. The temples were built by King Ramesses ll, one of the most powerful rulers of Egypt, between 1264 – 1244 BCE. The Great Temple was built to honor the king himself. At the entrance, the temple features four 20-meter-tall statues of King Ramesses sitting on his throne in his regal attitre. The Small Temple, on the other hand, was dedicated to his wife, Nefertiti, as a sign of eternal love. It has various statues of the Pharaoh and a statue of the queen.

Inside the temple is adorned by four statues seated on thrones beside each other. They represent the gods Amun, Ra-Horakhty, and Ptah, and Ramesses II himself. They were carefully positioned to emphasize the divine status of King Ramesses ll. This place, precisely, is flooded with tourists every single year in October and February to celebrate Abu Simbel Sun Festival. ✨️

Are you a fan of festivals? Because the Egyptian history is full of them! This includes Abu Simbel Sun Festival ☀️🎊

It's a bi-annual occurrence that symbolizes the renewal of life and divinity. It takes place on the 22nd of October, and 22nd of February. These dates coincide with the anniversary of King Ramesses ll's ascension to the throne and his birthday. During these times at sunrise and for nearly 20 minutes, the sun aligns with the entrance of the Great Temple and showers the inner sanctum with light, illuminating the statues of Ramsses ll, and the gods Amun, Ra-Horakhty, leaving Ptah -the God of Darkness- in the dark. Every year, tourist from every part of the world flock to witness such an awe-inspiring event.

Fun fact 🌟 The festival used to be celebrated on the 21st of October, and 21st of February. However, in the 1960s, the Abu Simbel temples were relocated to a higher ground to avoid being submerged by the rising waters of Lake Nasser. This changed the celebration one day afront.
