Feluccas are traditional sailing boats that have been used to transport people and goods along the River Nile since ancient times. You are invited to join us to cruise on Blue Mountain Felucca with Captain Mostafa Jamaica and his crew.
Relax as you sail down the mighty Nile River from Aswan, watching rural life unfold along the banks; stop in a safe swimming spot for a refreshing dip; watch magnificent sunsets; let the crew entertain you as they play traditional drums and sing Nubian songs around the fire on shore in the evenings; and enjoy peaceful sleep on the deck as you moor overnight.
Excellent meals, tea and coffee are included, and our felucca even has its own toilet!
· Depending on where you are staying, we may be able to pick you up at your accommodation, otherwise a suitable meeting place will be arranged nearby.
· Keep a backpack or overnight bag with you on deck with whatever you think you’ll need for the length of your journey, don’t forget your swimming gear and a towel. Large suitcases will be stored under the deck.
· Blankets are provided and you are welcome to bring your own sleeping bag if you like. There are plenty of cushions and pillows available on deck. Mosquito nets are placed around the boat at night.
· You won’t need your shoes on deck so take them off as you board. A basket will be provided for you to place your shoes in and of course they will be available for you whenever you go ashore.
· You will have a crew of three to look after you. They’ll do all the sailing, cooking, etc. and anything else that is required, but if you would like to join in just let them know. Likewise, if there’s anything you need, don’t be shy, please ask!
· A toilet is provided on Blue Mountain Felucca. Please do not flush toilet paper as it blocks the toilet and it will become unusable. A bin is provided for the disposal of toilet paper.
· You are welcome to sit or lie on the roof. Please be aware of the boom at all times and be very careful if walking around up there.
· How far and fast we sail is entirely governed by the wind. The felucca is a sail boat and does not have an engine so just sit back, relax and go with the flow.
One of our most popular sails is the two day, one night trip. Meet your crew in the morning and take a relaxing sail down the Nile, stop for a swim along the way and after watching the magnificent sunset help build a bonfire onshore in the evening. Sing and dance to the crew’s traditional drumming then sleep peacefully on deck for the night as you are moored by the banks. After a hearty breakfast set sail for your drop off point and bid farewell to your crew as you continue your journey by road.
Two night trips could have you visiting the Daraw Camel and Livestock Market and Kom Ombo Temple. Trips of four nights might see you make it as far as Edfu Temple with a visit to Gebel el-Silsila along the way. Let Captain Mostafa know where you’d like to go and what you’d like to do and see, and he will endeavour to tailor a personalised experience as close as possible to your wishes. Please keep in mind that the distance you travel and the speed at which you travel is entirely governed by the wind, so itineraries are always flexible and subject to change.
We are happy to assist you with accommodation in Aswan, particularly in the Nubian village on Elephantine Island. We can also help organise road transfers at the end of your felucca trip.
Prices are available on application and include the crew of three and all meals on board. There is an ice box on board and water, soft drinks and juice are available to purchase. Upon request, alcohol can also be provided at an additional cost. Entry fees and the cost of any onshore meals and activities are not included.
