After having lived in the mountains for many years, and appreciating them every day more, we would like to share some of our local treasures with you.
***This doesn't make us experts and we strongly advise to always be very careful with wild herbs, as some can be toxic!***
Just because nature is amazing, some fun facts about our harvest of today:
-Wild Asparagus (Esparrago salvaje), Apart from being delicious, asparagus are also rich in vitamins, amongst others, A, E, B9 and C and are often said to be beneficial for lungs, skin and to induce sleep.
(***The fruit of the asparagus, small green- to red when ripe- berries, are toxic and can not be eaten.)
-Wild lavender (Lavanda salvaje), beautiful and one of the most used plants in aromatherapy (essential oil) because of its wide range of health benefits. Dried it can be used, amongst other things, for the skin, because of its soothing effect. Dried lavender is also a well known insect deterrent. There are many kinds of (wild) lavender, most edible and some used for culinary purposes.
-Fennel (Hinojo), the fine fennel leaf is often used as a herb in a wide variety of dishes, from stews to pastries (tastes a bit anis). It is especially known for its antioxidants which can help reduce inflammation.
-Chamomile(manzanilla): Chamomile contains chemicals called flavonoids. These flavonoids are a type of nutrient present in many plants, and they play a significant role in chamomile’s medicinal effects, such as slowing down osteoporosis, lowering blood sugar and reducing inflammation.
-Rosemary (romero): although delicious and widely used for culinary purposes, rosemary is a herb to use in moderation. It has many health benefits such as anti inflammatory compounds, however when used in large quantities it can be toxic and cause allergic reactions.
-Thyme (tomillo): one of the most present herbs in the Alpujarras is thyme, packed with with vitamins C and A, it can help to prevent a cold, thyme can help get you back in good health. It is known for its antibacterial properties. In history people used it as protection against the black death.
-Carob (algarroba): Naturally sweet, the beans of the Carob tree are used as a healthier alternative for flour or even cocoa. It is rich in calcium, iron, vitamins B2 and B6.
