Tallinn Airport welcomed a record three million passengers in 2018. That’s an increase of 13% from the previous year, and up more than 10 times in the last 25 years. Several new destinations were added to the network — including Malta, Cyprus and Edinburgh — with airport chairman Piret Murk-Dubout attributing the increase in travellers to favourable economic conditions. The airport is planning a passenger terminal extension this year that could see numbers rise to up to six million

The Civil Aviation Authority has started legal proceedings against Ryanair over unpaid passenger compensation claims. The low-cost airline is refusing to compensate passengers for flight disruptions earlier this year, when its staff staged eight days of strikes over pay and working conditions. Under EU rules, airlines must compensate for delays that are within their control and can only avoid payments for “extraordinary circumstances” like bad weather. Ryanair could face a bill of more than £29 million, analysts suggest.

TAP Portugal received its first delivery of an A330neo jet on Monday from Airbus. The European aerospace company is competing with U.S. rival Boeing when it comes to middle-of-the-market long-haul planes, with the A330neo and Boeing 787 pitted against one another in a crowded segment of the aircraft business. The A330neo features a new Rolls-Royce engine which offers fuel savings, but the engines have been delayed because of industrial problems at Rolls-Royce. Airbus’ Guillaume Faury said he expected to catch up on delayed A330neo deliveries by end of next year.

More than 280 Air France passengers were stranded in Siberia for three days this week. The travellers were en route to Shanghai when their plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Irkutsk, where temperatures plummeted to nearly -20 degrees Celsius. A replacement aircraft also suffered technical difficulties, leaving the passengers — unprepared for the cold and under constant surveillance for not having visas — to wait for a third plane.

Estonian airline Nordica is pulling three unprofitable routes from its schedule. From January, the carrier will cease flying from Tallinn to Amsterdam and St Petersburg due to limited demand, as well as to Oslo because of fierce competition. Nordica, which has been in operation for three years, saw a 20% increase in passengers in the first half of 2018 compared with a year earlier. Several European airlines have failed in recent years as fuel prices rise and competition heats up

Source LinkedIn Daily “Turkey has officially opened its new mega-airport, set to be the world’s busiest. Although only a handful of flights will operate from there this week, by 2021 the $12 billion Istanbul Airport will be capable of handling up to 90 million passengers — with that number growing to 200 million by 2028 with a planned expansion. For comparison, the world’s current busiest airport, Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson, welcomed 104 million passengers last year, while London Heathrow saw 78 million. “
