EU digital vaccine certificates will be ready in June at the latest, Spain's foreign minister has said.

European Union leaders agreed last month to work on the certificates to try to kickstart the tourism industry.

Speaking on Wednesday, Arancha Gonzalez Laya said the scheme would be a good tool for European citizens and "if all goes well, we will have a vaccination certificate in June at the latest".

"If it can be in mid-May, better but not later than June," she added.

Ms Gonzalez Laya told Onda Cero radio on Wednesday that the EU's parliament had agreed to fast track the scheme.

But the foreign minister warned that it was currently "not the time to travel", and that the more responsible people are now "the more possibilities we will have to spend a normal summer".

Spain has been one of the hardest-hit by the pandemic in Europe and has recorded 75,305 deaths.

The health ministry is not providing official vaccination figures, so it is hard to determine how much progress has been made.

Based on conversations with regional health departments, it is thought that around 60% of older adults have received a jab, El Pais reported.

Commenting on the apparently slow rollout, Ms Gonzalez Laya said that "if the vaccines arrive", Spain will be able to administer them in record time thanks to the Spanish national health system, "which is very fast".

She also said the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine was safe and that Spain would follow the advice of the EU medicines regulator and continue using it.

The certificates would not prevent those without the jab from travelling, Ms Gonzalez Laya said, but people who had one would be able to pass through EU borders faster.

After more than 900,000 deaths from coronavirus in Europe, the continent has been plunged into a deep recession, with the tourist trade severely damaged.
