A three bedroomed, traditional cortijo with pool, in its own private grounds with fabulous views of the Sierra Lujar and Sierra Nevada mountains. We bought Casa de Almendras in 2013 with the idea that it would be a simple conversion to bring it into the twenty first century. Two years later, despite the word "conversion" being banned evermore from our conversation, we have the internet, hot water
, air conditioning, fridges, washing machine, modern kitchen and barbecue, music and all the comforts of home. Situated on a walking trail, just outside of Orgiva - 'the capital of the Alpujrras', the house enjoys the best of both worlds, rural privacy and a ten minute walk to the town with banks, shops and cafes. The immediate area boasts amazing views and walking trails for all abilities. By car it is well placed to visit both the beauty of secluded beaches on the Costa Tropical and the medieval moorish splendour of Granada. The unspoilt Alpujarran white villages, of Capileira and Pampaniera are a short drive from the house, in the famous Poqueira Valley with excellent restaurants and artisan shops with truly breathtaking views.

Fantastic walking company based in Lanjaron - private walking groups - from two people upwards. They know all the best routes and tailor each walk to your ability. Canyon walks are great in the heat - wade through rivers, cool off under waterfalls, swim in rock pools. A real adventure.

Where did the name Mulhacén come from?
It was named after Muley Hacén, a historical Berber leader who fought against the Christian reconquest of Spain in the 11th century. Muley Hacén was the ruler of the Kingdom of Granada, which included much of the Sierra Nevada range. The mountain was named in his honor in the early 20th century, after a group of climbers reached its summit for the first time. The name Mulhacén is derived from the Arabic name "Mulay al-Hasan," which means "the son of Hasan," a reference to Muley Hacén's ancestry.

Festival time in Lanjaron - lots going on!
Unspoilt beaches a short drive from the house in a stunning nature reserve ... just beautiful and with no developments along the beach it's very special. Water is crystal clear and full of fish as its prohibited to fish here.. so snorkelling is a real treat. Many of the beaches have good restaurants & kayak hire. In peak summer - June to September - you park and take a shuttle bus for a couple of euros down to the beach..you can also rent a sun bed for around 6 euros each for the day. TIP - get there early - as it can get busy and you want to be able to park in the car park to get the shuttle bus and bag your sun bed! Scroll down the article for other beaches in this reserve - we like Playa Cantarrajan - one section at the far end is a nudist beach - but anything goes - clothed or unclothed!

For nature lovers who want to leave the mountains of the Alpujarras for a day at the beach (but away from the tourist developments) - the Cerro Gordo National Park is breathtaking. We recommend Cantarrjan beach and the restuarant - Restaurante La Barraca Cantarrijan It's known as a nudist beach - but that's at an adjacent beach (through a cave) - the main beach is for families and has a laid back bohemian feel.
