When preparing our house for a viewing I sometimes wonder why or how we could plan to leave this beautiful place. Then I remember that having been here for 21 years now it is time to embrace retirement and move on to projects new. If anyone might be interested feel free to message us.

In the early days of the garden here at Cortijo Opazo we tried more than once to grow this emblematic Mediterranean plant, bougainvillea. Now that the microclimate here has been established and we can offer protection in winter it seems we might be lucky this time.

When we first started to plan our garden we planted quite a few vines, mainly to give shade. Each year they also give us grapes in abundance, we really should consider making our own wine. For now, though, I stuff handfuls into my mouth as I walk around the garden.

This week has been about pickling and preserving our produce. So far we've made cucumber pickle, pickled peppers, hot chilli sauce and courgette chutney. Today, something to do with all those apples.

No problems with over tourism here. Five hours walking in the high mountain valleys of the Sierra Nevada of Granada and we didn't see another person. And to think we were scarcely more than an hour away from the Mediterranean coast. The glorious Alpujarras of Andalucia.

Second half of June and there is still a significant amount of snow up in the Sierra Nevada. The melting snow irrigates the hillsides of the Alpujarras, which is why usually there is a plentiful supply of water in this special area despite what might be happening elsewhere in Spain.
