A Day in the Life of a Captive Orca at Seaworld

Float on the surface
beg at the edge of the tank
get fed dead fish
get water via a hose or gelatin cubes
circle the tank again
float on the surface
circle the tank a few more times
do some tricks in the show pool
splash visitors with your tail
get rewarded with dead fish
log listlessly in a back pool
glide around on the pool bottom
do some more laps
~ Darkness ~
Begin again
and again and again.

Is THIS life?!!!!
Please protest & boycott cruel captivity.

According to a recently released OSHA report, a SeaWorld Orlando trainer was injured while cleaning the inside of a captive orca’s mouth in June of last year (June 13, 2022).

The report says that the trainer had noticed that Malia, a 15-year-old captive orca at the park had some paint and food chips in her teeth and on the roof of her mouth. The trainer commanded Malia to open her mouth, and proceeded to clean with a pressurized pump spray bottle. The report says that this may have tickled, causing Malia to close her mouth while the trainer’s arm was left inside.

The incident left the trainer with multiple fractures to their forearm. A SeaWorld spokesperson said “The incident was reported to OSHA who investigated the matter and found no negligence or violation.” The trainer has since recovered, and SeaWorld was not cited for the incident “since no specific OSHA Standards apply,” but voluntary steps to reduce exposure to the hazards were recommended.

This incident is a reminder of safety issues captivity presents to both cetaceans and humans. For more on some of the issues orcas face in captivity, head to bit.ly/OrcasInCaptivity

THIRTEEN YEARS - STILL WAITING FOR HER SANCTUARY

On the 23rd of June 2010, an orca who was to become known as Morgan, was in need of help. Today, 13 years later, she still needs help. A different kind of help, but help, nonetheless.

We are asking everyone who cares write to Mr. Wolfgang Kiessling and ask him to stop breeding Morgan. She deserves a better life than to be used for breeding to make him more money. Also, please ask for her to be moved to a seaside sanctuary.

The Free Morgan Foundation continues to fight for Morgan. We have a number of actions underway, including presenting at the European Parliament about the issues that Morgan faces while being held at Loro Parque.

We encourage you as concerned citizens to reach out to Loro Parque, expressing your own concerns. Dr Almunia can be reached via email at [email protected] and the Loro Parque Foundation at [email protected] and the Loro Parque company via their web contact page https://www.loroparque.com/en/contact-loro-parque/. You can also phone them Loro Parque on (+34) 922 373 841.

JUST LAUNCHED: Petition asking Carnival Cruises to end all ties to dolphin captivity! Sign and share at https://bit.ly/CarnivalCruiseDolphins

In their Animal Welfare Statement, Carnival Cruise Lines states that, “As part of our vacation experience, we support sustainable tourism. We recognize that without careful management, there is the potential to cause stress to animals involved in excursions.” They also claim they will evaluate any allegations of “inappropriate animal welfare practices”.

Therefore, we are asking Carnival Cruise Lines to consider our allegations against such places as , , and Cabo Dolphins — all of which they partner with for their cruises to Mexico. We are in the possession of photos and written reports of dolphins with injuries, dolphin tanks and pools with no shade or protection from the elements, and premature dolphin deaths (including the disappearance of a calf from a Dolphinaris location in Mexico). Our team in Mexico has also filed reports with the government against these locations for water quality issues, dolphins being made to perform with injuries, lack of proper shade from the intense sun, and questionable mortality reports.

If you or anyone in your pod will be in Los Angeles at the end of this month:

CORKY will screen at the Dances With Films-LA festival at TCL Chinese Theatres on June 30 at 2:30pm.

The story of Corky, the world’s longest-held captive orca who was captured 53 years ago and sold to Marineland of the Pacific. Corky currently lives at SeaWorld San Diego, yet her family, the Northern Resident Killer Whales, are alive and well in their ocean home. Public sentiment about capturing, breeding, and keeping orcas in captivity has changed dramatically over recent years, leading, for example, to the work of the Whale Sanctuary Project, and other sanctuaries in the works, and giving hope for Corky and other cetaceans to be returned to their natural ocean habitat.

Spread the word about this important film by Christine Caruso, narrated by Holly Marie Combs Ryan.
